Iranian Activists Aren’t Too Happy With The Western Feminists Glamorizing Hijabs

Well, this is awkward.

You know how feminists – particularly those associated with the Women’s March – are suddenly all about holding up the hijab as some strange symbol of multicultural feminism and liberation? And those of us who understand what the hijab is actually used for in Islamic countries are sitting here going “Are you FOR REAL??”

Turns out it’s not just chicks like us who think these feminists are off their rocker. According to this, activists from Iran who are trying to free women from Islamic oppression are calling out Western fashion companies like Dolce and Gabbana, H&M, and Nike (who are spurred on by feminists in the West) for their tone-deaf lionization of the hijab.

One group called “My Steathly Freedom” posted this to Facebook, drawing the comparison between a fashion model wearing a glammed-out hijab to an Iranian woman who was beaten for not wearing her hijab properly –

And I LOVE what the founder of the group said about feminists in the West adopting the hijab as a symbol of freedom –

The founder of My Stealthy Freedom told BBC:
“I think the media in the West want to normalise the hijab issue – they want to talk about minority Muslims in the West, but they totally forget there are millions of women in Muslim countries that are forced to wear the hijab,” Alinejad says.
“If you want to talk about the hijab and introduce it as a sign of feminists or resistance you have to think about those girls and women who are forced to wear it,” she says.

You mean that Western feminists are completely ignoring the plight of women who are forced by their legitimately super-oppressive overly-patriarchal societies to wear the hijab? That it’s not actually a choice for Iranian women and many of them would love to decide whether or not they wear it? And that everything Western feminists are pushing for stinks to high heaven of hypocrisy??

Hm. Who else has been saying that, like, forever?

I’m not holding my breath that any feminists in the US or Europe are actually going to give a crap about Iranian women. After all, Western feminists have bigger problems to tackle! Like manspreading and forcing the taxpayers to pay for their abortions. When you’re dealing with oppression like that, who’s got time to care about women in Muslim countries getting beat up for not wearing their Islamic-mandated headscarves the right way?

Sheesh, ladies. Priorities.
