September 22, 2026What do Trump Jr. and a Russian oligarch have in common, you might ask? Well, his wedding reception, apparently.
(The Hill) — New reports of Russia-tied financial backing for the after-party events at the May wedding of President Donald Trump’s eldest son have sparked concerns about potential influences from foreign adversaries in the U.S. government ahead of the midterm elections.
Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev funded lavish wedding celebrations for Donald Trump Jr. and socialite Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas, including a private island and a fireworks show, according to a ProPublica investigation published on Monday.
And here I thought it was cool that I got some cash and a cheeseboard for my wedding.
The Russian oligarch is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and traveled with the head of state to China shortly before Trump Jr.’s wedding, according to reports from Chinese state media. In April, Putin presented Kremlev with the Order of Friendship, a high-level state honor.
Additionally, the Ukrainian government has personally sanctioned Kremlev due to his close proximity to the Russian leader.
Kremlev attended Trump Jr.’s 50-person wedding festivities with a group who spoke Russian and “whose presence puzzled other attendees,” ProPublica reported.
Trump Jr. released a statement clarifying that the events happened after his wedding, and noted Umar is a friend. However, I have a couple of thoughts:
- I don’t care how good of a friend this guy is, it’s a bad look for the Trump family.
- The Trumps are already mega rich, and more than capable of paying for their own festivities.
When questioned about the gift, President Trump stated that his son paid the businessman back. I don’t really care if Trump Jr. paid Kremlev back—the damage is already done. This situation is a sloppy PR mistake that could have been easily avoided.
