I Need To Talk About ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’…

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve just about had it with the media slobbering all over Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s eye-bleedingly-bad novel “The Handmaid’s Tale.” First of all, the book is HILARIOUSLY terrible (which is part of the reason feminists love it) and the only reason anyone reads it at all is because it’s been forced onto college students taking freshman-level English classes. Second of all, to hear the media talk, this is like, OMG the MOST RELEVANT THING IN THE WORLD! Because, you know, Donald Trump is president and whatever.

There are SO MANY reasons why that is the dumbest idea on the planet. And I will explain why.

If you don’t know the story of “The Handmaid’s Tale” – bless you and your innocence. And I apologize for having to set the stage for this. The book was written in the 1980s and is a futuristic dystopian tale of an America that’s been taken over by the EEEEEEEVIL religious right (and by “religious,” it obviously means Christianity). Humanity has suffered a plague that had rendered the majority of women infertile. The women who are discovered to still be fertile are caught and sold to rich couples who want children. Basically, these women are slaves for depraved men’s sexual appetites and they have no value other than pleasing men and being baby-production facilities.

Like I said, the leftist media has been falling all over itself to proclaim how timely and relevant this story is because of Trump and how he’s TOTALLY going to take away women’s rights (because he’s been in such a hurry to do that so far, lemme tell ya). Even Atwood got in on the feminist pearl-clutching after the 2016 election –

In the wake of the recent American election, fears and anxieties proliferate. Basic civil liberties are seen as endangered, along with many of the rights for women won over the past decades, and indeed the past centuries. In this divisive climate, in which hate for many groups seems on the rise and scorn for democratic institutions is being expressed by extremists of all stripes, it is a certainty that someone, somewhere — many, I would guess — are writing down what is happening as they themselves are experiencing it. Or they will remember, and record later, if they can.
Will their messages be suppressed and hidden? Will they be found, centuries later, in an old house, behind a wall?
Let us hope it doesn’t come to that. I trust it will not.

Acculturated’s Naomi Schaefer Riley has an excellent article talking about how absurd these claims are and I wholeheartedly agree –

But Atwood and her fans seem to have lost touch with reality. Here is the description of the opening scenes from the new Hulu series based on the novel:

This is how a war on women ramps up: First, their bank accounts are frozen, and then they’re forbidden to work. Protesters gather, waving signs and chanting. Then … the police open fire on the demonstrators. Bloodied bodies fall…

So which of these things seems even remotely likely to happen under Donald Trump’s rule? Is it that most of the American workforce will be forced to stay home? That they will suddenly lose access to their financial assets? Or that they will be shot dead in the streets? How about none of the above?

If women are at risk for being attacked in the streets, that would be more likely to come from the anti-Trump Antifa thugs. Just sayin’…

Besides – the idea of Donald Trump telling women to get back into the kitchen and be barefoot and pregnant is really stupid. Trump’s one of those guys who appreciates women both for their looks and brains. Sure, he’s made off-color comments about women in the past (and I’m not excusing that behavior at all). But that doesn’t mean he’s about to implement some strange theocracy where women are subjected to men to the point that they’re glorified slaves.

Quite the leap there, feminism.

On that note – (and back to the reason I hate “The Handmaid’s Tale” with all the fury of a thousand burning suns), the idea that this story is an allegory for Christianity is flat-out stupid. If academia were honest (and I’ll pause to let you have a good chuckle about that), anyone who made such a suggestion with a straight face would be laughed off campus and never allowed to work at an institution of higher learning ever again.

Of all the religions to accuse of being oppressive to women and enslaving them, Christianity is the LAST one anyone with half a brain should think of. Christ’s teachings are all about treating men and women equally, loving your neighbor as yourself. He taught men, women, and children that all should come unto Him for salvation and that God is no respecter of persons. If you have faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Redeemer, you are counted among His followers.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

But let’s just think about this – could there be another religion that teaches that women are inferior and only exist to please men and bear their children? Is there another religious text that tells men it’s okay to beat their wives? How about selling women and girls into sexual slavery? Or cutting up little girls’ bodies so they can never feel sexual pleasure? Or dressing women up in long robes and headcoverings so no one can ever look at them? Or mandating that they can never be out in public without a male relative? Or attacking girls who dare to go to school and get an education?

If Atwood was honest (again, have a laugh about that), she could easily draw parallels between her story and teachings of Islam and how that is the true war against women in today’s world. But that would be Islamophobic, you know.

Besides, the atrocities committed against women by Islam are NOTHING compared to the suffering Western women have to endure when they’re told they have to pay for their own birth control. Or *shudder*  listen to opinions that differ from their own!
