If you work, or consider yourself lucky enough to have a job or work, you will have to work until April 24th – or 114 days from the first of the year – to pay off our collective total tax bill. That’s “Tax Freedom Day” this year, y’all. Yep. According to the Tax Foundation. There’s data and everything.
This is the day when “the nation has earned enough money to pay its total tax bill for the year and calculates it by taking all federal, state, and local taxes and dividing this by the nation’s income.”
And this year, we as Americans are paying $5 TRILLION in taxes. That’s $3.3 in federal and $1.6 in state and local. That’s a “third of national income.”
We spend more on taxes than we do “on food, clothing, and housing COMBINED.”
Just let that soak in for a minute. Or five.
I’ve been paying taxes since I was 14. So when people tell me that I don’t pay my fair share? I promptly tell them to suck it. Especially when almost half the country doesn’t pay federal taxes at all, and I’m working to pay THEIR fair share . And especially in light of the fact that I’ll probably never see a dime of my social security, knowing that I can save WAAAAAAAAAY better than the government can.
The government is about as inept at handling money as my Great Dane puppy. And it’s absolutely senseless that they get to take it from me every two weeks and metaphorically set it on FIRE, and I can’t do a darn thing about it.
You know, Mock and I say it all the time on our radio show. We wish that people had to WRITE A CHECK EVERY PAY PERIOD for their taxes. If they had to do that….if they had to physically write a check like they did for their utilities?
Well, they sure would vote differently at election time. Guaranteed.
You’d see a hell of a lot less focus on gender pronouns and ladyparts in this country and a hell of a lot more focus on the fact that the federal government is pissing away your hard-earned money. Especially if you’re a true conservative, IMHO (yeah, I said it).
Because I’m not sure if anyone’s noticed lately, but we’re (still) hemorrhaging at an alarming rate. And promising free crap to freeloaders isn’t going to solve the whole bleeding-out problem (I’m talking to you, Bernouts and Hillbots). Every working person needs skin in the game.
Fun fact – In 1900, we only paid 5.9% in taxes. This year, it’s 31%. Look how much the government has grown since then. Look how much the debt has grown since then. Look how much bureaucracy has grown since then. Look how much our headaches have grown since then.
I’m just going to leave it there.
Happy Thursday, y’all. Vote conservative.
