November 9, 2022Maybe it was unintentional, or maybe Ohio Senator elect JD Vance is fully aware Trump is on everyone’s last nerve right now. Either way, Vance noticeably didn’t mention Trump during his victory speech on Tuesday night.
“Vance is among a number of high-profile Senate candidates in tight races who Trump endorsed, but he is the only one to have secured a victory on Tuesday night,” Fox News reported. “Vance’s victory speech saw him thanking dozens of people involved either directly in his campaign or in assisting his win, but Trump wasn’t among them.”
I could be projecting my own irritation onto the situation—after Trump’s uncalled for attacks on DeSantis, I’m all Trumped out for the time being—but I’m starting to wonder if this is the moment we see a shift in the Republican party.
Has the distancing started?
Is Trump the stinky kid in class?
Did he finally step on too many toes?
I’m starting to think it’s possible.
However, Fox News noted Vance DID thank Trump for his endorsement on Wednesday. #AfterThought?
“I can’t thank President Trump enough for his support. His endorsement and the work he did to drive turnout – including a huge rally in Dayton on election eve – made all the difference in this race, and led us to the largest battleground victory in the nation,” Vance said.
Time will tell if Vance omitting mention of Trump during his speech was an accident or the beginning of many snubs to come.

Part of me kind of hopes that this does signal the beginning of the end of Trump as a candidate. Don’t get me wrong – he was a great President and did some wonderful things for the country. But at this point, we’ve got other great candidates (cough, cough, DeSantis, cough, cough…) that don’t have the baggage or the ego that Trump comes with. They are, I hope, the future of the party. Trump needs to stay in his lane and continue working as a “kingmaker,” endorsing and financially backing conservative candidates in down ticket races. That is where he can most help the country and the conservative movement.
Do I think that’s what he will do? Of course not, he’s going to run again. The only question is how much damage is his candidacy going to do to the party this time around.
