Of all the sentences I hate from 2021, I hate this one the most.
Amanda Gorman, age 22, is an award winning author who has written for the New York Times, traveled the world for speaking engagements and even performed for Joe Biden’s inauguration. I didn’t watch it, so I didn’t know who she was before all this anarchy hit the news, but it sounds like she’s hot stuff. At least in the world of black poetry.
Well Amanda Gorman’s writing may appease the woke crowd, but apparently some of her decisions do not. In looking for someone to translate her collection, “The Hill We Climb” into Dutch, Amanda hand-picked an award-winning Dutch author who…(gasp!)…Was. Not. Black.
What in the grand wizard of the KKK is going on here? Who put raisins in the potato salad? To quote another young so-called prodigy, “How DARE you”?!
Gorman chose Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, the youngest winner of the International Booker prize, to translate her work but another young activist and journalist, Janice Deul, said this was an “Incomprehensible choice”. Incomprehensible. Like, not to be understood. Unintelligible. It’s almost like Gorman chose someone who publicly advocates for the killing of babies or something. Crazy.
I love that young people are the voice of authority and rationality on the left. It really makes their values ring loud and clear.
Marieke Lucas Rijneveld has chosen to step down and remove herself from the opportunity of a lifetime so that the right Dutch poet can be found; one who is young, female, Dutch and unapologetically black.
The definition of black is relative these days. For example, Candace Owens is literally a white supremacist, but Shaun King who was born a lily-white redhead is the epitome of black power. Perhaps Marieke Lucas Rijneveld should have simply identified as black! They can’t argue with that logic, they made the stupid rules in the first place.
