We Gotta Talk About That Superbowl Halftime Show
Did y’all see Shakira and JLo shaking it at halftime?
I’m pretty easily entertained by Superbowl halftime shows – and honestly I love almost all of them. This one was entertaining too – and Shakira and JLo are drop dead gorgeous.
There are massively mixed reviews on Twitter. Lots of people say the whole thing was pornographic and oversexualized, but I don’t know that it was much more so than – say – Britney’s half time show some years back. Did I like Prince better? And Bruno Mars? And Maroon 5? And countless others? Yup. I did. But this show definitely held my interest. TBH – I’m not a huge fan of Shakira’s music, and I find her voice mostly annoying, but her HIPS DO NOT LIE, and I love watching her dance. And JLo is FIFTY, you guys. She is clearly an alien.
There was this one moment though, that made me actually laugh out loud, and I’m not sure that was the desired reaction?
This made me uncomfortable. 😂 https://t.co/Lx1zOuF7Jy

Yikes. That was really cringe, mostly because I wasn’t sure if she was trying to look like a lizard or, I don’t know, some sort of sexy jihadist.
But the most cringe thing for me? JEB BUSH TWEETING ABOUT IT.
Why does this make me uncomfortable https://t.co/m6HMzP8kqT

There’s just something really odd about how much he enjoyed it, y’all.
Here’s someone with a valid question:
So are we or aren't we supposed to objectify women?
Confused because this whole halftime show with millions watching is nothing but both superstar entertainers trying to get us to look at their hips and asses. And boobs apparently.
Am I wrong?

It’s a constant struggle really – to understand if feminism is all about showing as much sexiness as possible with as little clothing as possible OR if it’s about not being objectified. I can’t keep up. I mean, obviously Shakira and JLo wanted everyone to see their bodies writhing around and have as many ass and crotch shots as possible. So….are they empowered by that? Are they ok with the fact that they were leered at by millions of people who were likely paying far more attention to their bodies than their music? Or are they gonna be mad that people were thinking about them sexually when they were performing instead of appreciating their songwriting and singing?
My 14 year old son is at a friend’s house watching the game with 8 of his dude friends. This was our text exchange:
Shakira and JLo definitely got the 14-year old boy demographic’s approval. So, there’s that. 🙂
