Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Breastfeeds In Campaign Ad

Meet Krish Vignarajah. She’s one of six Democrats challenging Larry Hogan in Maryland’s governor’s race. She’s the ONLY female candidate running, and she’s really capitalizing on that. She’s putting it front and center. She actually decided to breastfeed in her campaign ad, because…#GirlPower?

“There are no women in statewide or federal office in Maryland. None,” Vignarajah said.

“This isn’t just about representation, it’s about policy,” she continued. “States with women in government have better schools, better healthcare, lower incarceration rates. I want all of that for Maryland.”

Look– I don’t have a problem with breastfeeding. It’s natural and wonderful and yada yada yada. This isn’t about that. This is about a Democratic candidate taking that beautiful thing and politicizing the crap out of it. That’s what she’s doing here, no? We get it. You’re a woman. You have ladyparts. You’re a breastfeeding mom. Who cares? Nothing about that qualifies you to govern.

Oh wait– did someone say something about qualifications?

“My parents came to this country with $200, and I grew up to be policy director for Michelle Obama,” Vignarajah said.

See? She has boobs AND worked for Michelle Obama, so obviously she’s qualified to govern. What more do you people want?!

“Some say no man can beat Larry Hogan. Well, I’m no man. I’m a mom. I’m a woman. And I want to be your next governor,” she said.

I feel completely uninspired right now. Just because you’re breastfeeding in your ad doesn’t mean you’re someone who will put forth sound policies that will empower people of BOTH genders.

When asked why she chose to breastfeed in her ad, she said:

“I wanted to be true to my experience and message and why I am running, and at the core of that is my daughter,” she told The Cut. “Part of that is also me breastfeeding. I know sometimes people shirk away from that part of it, and I just thought, Why?”

Tell me ladies– does this campaign ad resonate with you? Does it make you want to vote for her? Does it make you feel empowered? Am I the only one here who’s completely unamused?
