The piece was originally written in 2015 by Phobe Maltz Bovy, but New Republic decided to tweet it back out yesterday, as it was ESPECIALLY relevant right now.
Ban guns. All guns. Get rid of guns in homes, and on the streets, and, as much as possible, on police. Not just because of San Bernardino, or whichever mass shooting may pop up next, but also not not because of those. Don’t sort the population into those who might do something evil or foolish or self-destructive with a gun and those who surely will not. As if this could be known—as if it could be assessed without massively violating civil liberties and stigmatizing the mentally ill. Ban guns! Not just gun violence. Not just certain guns. Not just already-technically-illegal guns. All of them.

I grew up in Mexico…. a country with INCREDIBLY STRICT gun laws. In the over 12 years I lived there, I never met ONE civilian with a gun…. how is that working out for them? It’s SUPER SAFE over there, right ?
What Phobe Maltz Bovy, professional doorknob, doesn’t GET is that banning all guns WILL CHANGE VERY LITTLE. Let’s say all guns are banned. Fine. There are over 300 million guns in America…. how do you intend to round them all up?
Let’s say we have forced “turning in” of guns… surely a lot of people WILL turn in their guns. You know who won’t? Someone who would actually attack people. You think psycho shooters and violent gang members are going to wrap up their guns and turn them in? ARE YOU THAT DENSE?!
So what would a TOTAL gun ban do? Leave innocent civilians completely unprotected from those who would break laws one way or another.
It’s completely idiotic….
which is why the libs are so sure it would work.
