Donald Trump Will Push For A Constitutional Amendment To Impose Term Limits On All Members Of Congress

Donald Trump wants to “drain the swamp,” and he believes there’s one main way to do it: Term limits.

He made the announcement at a campaign rally in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tuesday afternoon, telling the crowd that he’ll push for a Constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress.

“If I’m elected president, I will push for a Constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress,” Trump said. “Right? They’ve been talking about that for years.”

The Trump campaign released a statement, elaborating on his proposal.  Under his specific proposal, members of the House would be limited to a six-year limit (three terms) and members of the Senate would be limited to a 12-year limit (two terms).

“Decades of failure in Washington, and decades of special interest dealing, must come to an end,” the statement reads. “We have to break the cycle of corruption, and we have to give new voices a chance to go into government service. The time for Congressional term limits has arrived.”

It would be difficult to do. Obviously, he wouldn’t be able to act alone. It’s not easy to amend the Constitution. In fact, the president has very little– if nothing– to do with the actual process. Article V of the Constitution states:

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

It’s still a good idea. He should definitely push it. Think about it. How many losers have been able to sit in Congress for decades and get rich while doing absolutely nothing for their country or constituents? *coughNancyPelosicoughcough*
