November 9, 2022Well, ladies and gentlemen, professional women’s basketball player Brittney Griner has now been moved to a penal colony. And while “penal colony” may sound like an all-male nudist camp—it’s actually a lot less entertaining than that.
“Russian penal colonies are known for having far harsher conditions than the Moscow jail where Griner has been since she was detained in February,” ESPN said.

Griner’s family and lawyers are also still in the dark about where her exact location is.
“Notification is given via official mail and normally takes up to two weeks to be received,” her lawyers said.
On the bright side, they will probably still find out where she is sooner than we will have election results. So, there’s that.

“Penal Colony” is a fancy term for what Russia used to call “gulags”. By either name, they are very very bad places to be. They’re all over Russia, but most are concentrated in western Russia, and mostly in the northern latitudes, where the weather ranges from chilly to freezing cold. It ain’t a country club prison like the white collar prisons here in the US.
The Russian penal system rewards prisoners who display good behavior mainly by granting parole or conditional release for those who follow the rules and regulations and do their duties well.
Furthermore, Russia doesn’t give a rat’s ass what the rest of the world thinks of the way it runs its prisons.
