March 7, 2024The United Methodist Church appears to have messed around and found out—and their budget is suffering because of it.
The United Methodist Church is facing a more than 40% cut in its four-year budget due to the exodus of thousands of congregations over policies on LGBTQ issues, according to UM News, the church’s official news service.
The church is dealing with a $346.7 million budget for 2025-2028 — a 43% decline from its previous four-year spending plan of $604 million, UM News reported.
The budget reduction stems from the exit of 7,673 of congregations from America’s second-largest Protestant denomination. In 2022-2023 alone, 7,432 congregations left the United Methodist fold.
Most have left over how the church should handle LGBTQ issues, including same-sex marriage and ordination to the ministry. A large number have joined the Global Methodist Church, which brands itself as a more traditional body.
This is my shocked face.
But seriously, what did they expect? When you go against God’s Word and cave to societal peer pressure PEOPLE ARE GOING TO LEAVE. God’s Word doesn’t change based on the newest woke political agenda. It is constant and unchanging. And when churches become lukewarm and weak…well….

Church membership has dropped from 70% in 2000 to 47% in 2020 and it is still going down post covid. America is increasingly becoming a post-Christian culture and this probably has more to do with it than any other single factor.
Long time no see.
It may come as a revelation to some, but a church MUST be conservative. Its whole purpose is to conserve and promulgate a body of doctrine. If it makes large changes to that doctrine — right or wrong doesn’t matter — people will cease to see it as a fount of truth from the highest Authority, which is what all churches must claim to be.
