Muslim Students in Canada Berated by Their Teacher for Skipping Pride Events

People have lost all sense of self-respect and decorum. That’s… not news?

Well… here’s another log for the fire, then.

A female teacher in Alberta, Canada recently was recorded blasting Muslim students in her class for skipping school during Pride-themed events — telling them that if they continued, they “can’t be Canadian” and “don’t belong” in the country.

The unnamed teacher from Londonderry School attempted to guilt-trip the students by noting their classmates showed up for them during Ramadan: “They’re showing respect to the class — for your religion.”

“It goes two ways,” the teacher continued. “If you want to be respected for who you are, if you don’t want to suffer prejudice for your religion, your color of skin or whatever, then you better give it back to people who are different from you. That’s how it works. It’s an exchange.”

“That’s not what Canada believes,” she said. “We believe in freedom. We believe that people can marry whomever they want. That is in the law — and if you don’t think that should be the law, then you can’t be Canadian.”

Local Muslims said the teacher’s comments were “alienating,” the Edmonton Journal reports.

“[The teacher] seems to have the opinion that it is somehow un-Canadian to have a difference of opinion. I think this is exactly the opposite of what diversity and inclusiveness mean,” said Jamal Osman, vice-president of the Muslim Community of Edmonton Mosque. “Diversity and inclusion does not mean you will think one way. That’s counterintuitive.”

The National Council of Canadian Muslims added that it was “deeply concerned” about the teacher’s “deeply Islamophobic, inappropriate and harassing behaviour.”

Londonderry Principal Ed Charpentier said the teacher’s remarks were “not representative of the school’s values.”

Where are people getting drugs this good? You’ve gotta be high as a kite to think this makes any kind of sense. Or a politically progressive jacka$$…

Why does this have to be all or nothing? Must “support” for every community be shouted from the rooftops in order for it to matter? I don’t think the overarching pride month argument has anything to do with taking anyone’s legal rights away. I think it has more to do with the freedom to disagree without ridicule, and the unnecessary element of forced participation. Skipping the local pride parade doesn’t make you a homophobe. Choosing not to observe Ramadan doesn’t make you Islamophobic, and women not wanting to compete in sports with dudes doesn’t make you a transphobe.

This woman’s argument is ludicrous. I would, however, love to see the same kind of reverence for a difference in opinion offered by the local Muslim community if your religion of choice happens to be… something else. I don’t appreciate the conditional respect of freedom in any capacity. If it’s not true in all aspects, then you don’t really have it. I don’t care what color you are, what religion you practice, or who you sleep next to in the bed at night. In the end, none of it matters. We’re all just people working too many hours who earn an obscenely small amount of money for such a soul-sucking effort. It’s the pits, but pretty much everybody’s in the same boat. This can be hard to remember in the heat of the argument, but it doesn’t make it any less true.

This lady’s an unhinged jackhole for many reasons. The top of this list probably concerns the fact that she’s under the delusion that Canada stands for freedom. That alone tells you she’s full of sh*t and wouldn’t know her a$$ from a hole in the ground…

She also puts pride month on equal footing with a religious holiday. That’s a whole other issue that speaks for the times. When a society treats a social identity as a religion, you know something, somewhere has gone terribly wrong. Or, if being judged from the viewpoint of a ruling class desperate to keep the flames of social strife stoked for their benefit… very, very right.
