Brittney Griner is Simply a Casualty of a “Low Regard for Women’s Sports,” Professor Says

We’re actually to the point where people aren’t even making up excuses for themselves anymore.

I guess you know you’ve made it to the big leagues when you have other losers scraping the bottom of the barrel to explain away your screw-ups…

Can you tell I’m a huge fan of Brittney Griner?

Can you also tell that I had never heard of her before she got herself arrested?

I won’t bore you with any more rhetorical questions. On to the story…

A visiting professor of education at St. Lawrence University claims that women’s basketball phenom Brittney Griner was a victim of the low regard people have for women’s sports.

Elisa Van Kirk asks in the Times Union why Griner, imprisoned in Russia for drug possession and ultimately part of a prisoner exchange for a deadly arms merchant, even had to go to that country to play in the first place.

A former college Division I athlete and current head softball coach at St. Lawrence, Van Kirk uses anecdotes to ponder whether disinterest in women’s sports isn’t grounded in overall quality and competitiveness … but simple “hatred and disdain.”

“[A] few months ago, a man started a conversation with me about how the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is ‘boring’ because most women do not dunk,” Van Kirk says. She’s also heard that “no one would come to our games,” that “we could never beat the boys” and “all about the biological differences why men were more athletic.”

And in cases where women “prevailed in coed competition to combat” such pronouncements, “the insults started.”

If Van Kirk is iffy on basic biology, she also is on economics. If someone like the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge can demand $300 million and get it, she says, why can’t someone like Griner?

“Women who want to play in the U.S. are often forced to take the salary they are given because they should feel ‘lucky’ for the opportunity,” the sports and gender researcher concludes.

First of all, the only reason Brittney Griner’s a$$ ended up in a Russian jail cell was because of her own stupidity. Her arrest had nothing to do with a lack of respect for women’s sports…

Are you kidding me? You could grab any guy off a random street corner in America and he’ll tell you that getting caught with drugs in Russia = jail. It’s simple, straightforward common sense. Thank you, end of story.

Second of all, perhaps the problem is not that we pay female athletes too little, but that we pay male athletes too much. Maybe if we evened the playing field a little bit, there wouldn’t be so much griping. I’m not counting on it… I said maybe…

Personally, I think $300 million for Aaron Judge to hit a ball with a stick (or not hit enough balls with sticks) is on the verge of criminal. The people that actually make the economy run are struggling to keep up with their bills and feed their children. We can’t even properly take care of our veterans after they return home. I think to say that money too often gets invested in the wrong places would be an understatement…

This same argument applies to all those Hollywood creeps too. Entertainers shouldn’t make more than the next two or three generations of our families will see in their lifetimes. Especially when most of their output is absolute garbage.

Also… as a former female athlete myself, I sleep totally fine at night after admitting that men’s sports is more interesting. It’s almost like men and women are… different…

It’s not as if men and women attract the same crowds and women are still getting monetarily stiffed. They get paid less because not as many people are watching. That also means they’re, oh… I don’t know… bringing in less money…

See? The math is simple, and I suck at math…

I’m not saying that women deserve to have less people watching, but until they can figure out how to attract bigger crowds, then there’s not much room for complaining. I wouldn’t recommend accusing people of being sexist bigots to achieve a higher turnout, though…
