Obesity is lethal and expensive. According to the National Institute of Health, “obesity and overweight together are the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States.” According to the CDC, “The US obesity prevalence was 41.9% in 2017-March 2020,” and “the estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was nearly $173 billion in 2019 dollars.” The WHO explains, “Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with at least 2.8 million people dying each year as a result of being overweight or obese.” Obesity-related conditions, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, also top the charts in preventable and premature death in the US.
It is also a significant and unnecessary strain on the nation’s healthcare system due to the astounding amount of care and increased healthcare risks for the unprecedented number of obese and overweight Americans. I remember all the discussion during COVID about how the un-COVID-vaccinated were taxing the healthcare system and therefore endangering other patients by allowing themselves to be at risk for a “preventable” disease. But the same could be said of the majority of the obese and overweight in this country. And, speaking of COVID, data have shown that obesity is a leading comorbidity contributing to severe COVID infection or COVID-caused death– which is why it made absolutely no sense for the government to shut down gyms and close down outdoor recreational spaces while labeling fast-food an “essential service.” But without double standards, leftists would have none at all.
Despite all this, there is a woke movement to not only destigmatize but actively celebrate obesity. Magazine covers, corporate ad campaigns, mainstream media pseudo-science misinformation, and so much more are involved in trying to influence Americans to believe that obesity is healthy and praiseworthy.
But Bill Maher was willing to speak up about this ridiculous and dangerous movement.
Obesity-related conditions are the leading cause of death in America, the leading COVID-death-related comorbidity in America, and disproportionately affect people of lower socioeconomic status.

You’d think they wouldn’t perpetually glorify and glamorize it. @billmaher #obesity https://t.co/5WCFvk1MRp pic.twitter.com/ZSrtSvRzsj
Y’all, I get it. It’s a struggle to keep your body healthy. And healthy, like so many other things, looks different for different people. I promise, I get it. But nuance aside, it is dangerous and illogical to actively celebrate something that very clearly has a negative impact on almost every aspect of a person’s life. Rather than cause offense now by helping people to understand that their obesity is a problem, the woke mob would rather avoid the offense and allow an entire generation to grow up feeling empowered by something that is objectively dangerous to them.
This is just like the government hesitating to tell gay men to stop having orgies and anonymous sex in order to prevent monkeypox infection for fear they will offend or stigmatize. Science and public health have taken a back seat to woke agendas, and it’s very dangerous.

I have gone back and forth between being obese and being at a slim-normal weight a couple of times in my life. Thank God (and Weight Watchers) I have managed to stay at a healthy normal weight for the past 20+ years.
When I went from obese to slim-normal, my prescriptions for BP and cholesterol medications either decreased substantially or were discontinued all together. I felt so much better, had much more energy, and enjoyed life so much more.
I know some people are obese because of health issues. But most are obese because they are lazy and just don’t want to put the work in to change. They are condemning themselves to a lifetime of health problems and the greatly increased chance of an early death. That doesn’t just affect them, but everyone who loves them and depends on them. It’s when I was married and had children that I finally “woke up” and worked hard to be healthy.
Yes. But our government is trying to reduce the world population. And causing the plandemic helped in that.
The celebration of fatness is the opposite of fashion magazines featuring anorexic models that look like crack addicts.
After a pandemic, stolen election, and a less aware Mr. Magoo in office……all some people have is food- with the price of food, obesity should decrease significantly in the next year
I’m obese and I don’t approve of normalizing it. I wouldn’t necessarily call my being overweight preventable, bc I’ve had hormonal imbalances since my early teens that doctors never knew how to treat (hence, I never knew how to handle), and it led to greater unhealthiness that is now incredibly difficult to treat. So I’m not healthy, but I have always–and will always–try to get healthy. That said, it’s the ONLY reason I got jabbed, bc my much healthier cousin “almost died” from COVID in the hospital according to an uber liberal family friend who is also a nurse. And I was afraid it’d kill me on the spot if it had him on the edge. But obesity is not normal, it costs the nation bukoo bucks, and half of it is bc our food supply is full of sh*t. We need to get back to farming, promoting fruits and veg, and having kids participate in outdoor activities from a young age. THAT’S what we need to normalize–hiking, biking, swimming, swinging on swings, skating, playing hopscotch–things I did as a kid only if the weather was nice. Now, as an adult, I don’t like it too hot or rainy. But my little nieces have a dad who loves the outdoors, and hot and humid or rainy and gloomy are all acceptable days to be outdoors enjoying the earth. I applaud him, and I applaud my sister for making fruits and vegetables after school snacks vs cookies and candy and cake.
