July 22, 2022A mass exodus of teachers over the past year or so has people understandably worried about the future of America’s youth. America has never seen anything like it, and if things continue down this trajectory we’re going to end up like England.
Ladies and gentlemen, we DO NOT WANT TO END UP LIKE ENGLAND.
In order to figure out what the eff is going on, Tony Kinnett with Chalkboard Review recently distributed a survey to teachers in the Midwest who have left their jobs to find out what drove them away. What he found isn’t necessarily surprising, but it is shocking: The worsening behavior of our nation’s children is overwhelmingly to blame.
The survey of 615 eligible respondents from the Midwest (Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, but confusingly– and insultingly?– not my home state of Nebraska) found that the top three reasons teachers gave for their decision to leave were student behavior (52%), progressive politics (22%), and insufficient salary (22%). When salary was given as an ancillary reason (“I’m not being paid enough to deal with _______”), a whopping 73% of teachers cited student behavior as the driving factor.
Holy crap. What the hell is happening to our nation’s children that they are so overwhelmingly monstrous?
Obviously, the kids themselves aren’t exactly to blame– they are children in the process of being molded, and they will adapt to whatever environment in which they find themselves. Honestly, that’s the scary part. Their environment is responsible for producing these inhabitants, and the factors that go into said environment are manifold. How are we supposed to fix this trajectory when it requires us to change almost everything about the world in which American kiddos are growing up?
I spent two years on the frontlines, as it were, with today’s teens at an after-school and summer camp program. I know very well what teachers across the country are dealing with, and I tell you what, I wouldn’t sign up for that job if you paid me a thousand dollars an hour. I adore those kiddos, don’t get me wrong, but they are little savages. Not even people with the utmost love for these youth and determination to see them succeed can be expected to spend their lives fighting what feels like a losing battle.
Now, it is possible that things aren’t all that bleak; Kinnett freely acknowledges the shortcomings of his survey. He intends to conduct a more expansive study in partnership with other researchers in order to paint a clearer picture of what’s going on in America’s schools, and I look forward to learning what they find out.
In the meantime, give a child consequences. It’s the best we can do for them right now.

When my father started teaching in the late 1960’s, many of the more successful teacher viewed themselves largely as lion tamers, and it worked. Starting in the eighties, (which time depends on where), the administrators began to actively stop the discipline of students. When I started first grade, the principle had a paddle in his office. Before my little brother began junior high, he was insisting that it had never been true, those things weren’t allowed in school.
The discipline system they teach teachers only works with very well meaning and affectionate five year olds. By sixteen? You’ve got to be kidding.
Allow the kids to take the mitigated results while adults can still fix bad side-effects.
It also helps to enforce the “piddling” rules, like no hoods on in class: some students actively want to misbehave and rebel, and that keeps their rebellion at a safe level, while poking at their belief that they can dress themselves however they feel like in all situations for life………..another important lesson.
Wasn’t there a fella a few years ago that said something about sparing the rod and spoiling the child? Could he have been on to something?
Broken homes, broken culture, and worshiping on the alter of mental illness.
You see it every day in every news story and everything that goes on around you.
The left is looking to take advantage, too. They know that a poorly educated, unarmed, and confused/distressed country would be easy to bring to heel, so they push for those very things under the guise of compassion when it’s nothing of the sort.
Republicans are no better – they fix nothing but merely try to “stop” or “normalize” what’s gone on and do nothing to fix it.
