We Need To Address The Dolly Parton Hullabaloo

OPINION | This article contains political commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

If you’re the kind of person who only skims headlines and takes them at face value without bothering to read full articles, watch full videos, or do just the basic amount of due diligence, you might be thinking that Dolly Parton is basically a Black Lives Matter movement activist now.

I mean, just check out these headlines:

There are plenty more, but you get the idea.

Notice how these headlines claim that Dolly Parton supports the BLM MOVEMENT.  The CBS one claims she supports the protests.  And they’re basing those headlines on the recent interview Dolly did with Billboard, which you can read in its entirety right here.

Except that it’s not quite in its entirety, as you’ll soon see.  In fact, in the printed piece, here’s the passage that refers to BLM:

Parton hasn’t attended any recent marches, but she is unequivocal in her support of protestors and the Black Lives Matter movement. “I understand people having to make themselves known and felt and seen,” she says. “And of course Black lives matter. Do we think our littl white asses are the only ones that matter? No!”

Oddly, that doesn’t quite match up with the video that Billboard posted. They left out the very crucial ending:

Did you catch her basically saying, “ALL LIVES MATTER” at the end? Very few media outlets are including that part of her quote in their write-ups. Huh. IT’S SO WEIRD, you guys.

Except it’s not. It’s completely predictable. Dolly Parton is supportive of the PHRASE “Black Lives Matter” which most normal people with brains are supportive of. But nowhere is she quoted directly about the movement. NOWHERE. And I would be willing to bet money that she wouldn’t be supportive of this:

Or this:

Now listen, I’m willing to be proven wrong if DOLLY PARTON HERSELF wants to clear the record. But that’s the point. All of these narrative-driven media outlets are rushing to the conclusion that Dolly Parton supports the Marxist, domestic terrorist group that is the BLM MOVEMENT, when in fact, she simply says she understands that black people want to be heard, that they matter, and that ALL PEOPLE MATTER. That’s it. That’s all she said. And unless Billboard comes out with some more video that shows Dolly saying unequivocally that she supports the MOVEMENT then it’s irresponsible to report as fact that she DOES support the movement. There is a ton of daylight between supporting the phrase and supporting the movement.

Which is why I’m officially suggesting that normal common sense people start saying, “Black Lives Are Important.” That way, there is clear delineation between normal people who care about black lives, and the insane lunatics who are part of the BLM movement.
