The other day, we told you about how a jury would soon be deciding how much Sen. Rand Paul’s attacker should pay Paul in damages.
It sounds like the entire beef stemmed from some sort of property line fight. Word has it Paul was upset when his neighbor, Rene Boucher, trimmed limbs from his (Paul’s) maple tree. Boucher claims Paul repeatedly loaded up yard waste right on their property line as a form of subtle retaliation. Paul denies that. He claims the pile was well on HIS property– not Boucher’s. Ultimately, Boucher’s anger consumed him. He spotted Paul mowing his lawn and tackled him to the ground. Paul said he was afraid he might die.
“The thought crossed my mind, ‘I may never get up from this lawn,’” Paul said.
Hence, Paul asked for $500,000 for compensation for all the pain and suffering he’s endured.
He won.
The jury awarded him about $580,000 in damages.
The jury awarded Paul $375,000 in punitive damages and $200,000 for pain and suffering, plus $7,834 for medical expenses.
This lawsuit wasn’t about me. It was about all of us and what we find acceptable as a society. We need to send a clear message that violence is not the answer – anytime, anywhere.
We can hold different views, whether it’s politics, religion or day to day matters.

It’s never ok to turn those disagreements into violent, aggressive anger. I hope that’s the message from today.
