People are addicted to being offended.
That’s the only explanation I can think of.
They’re hooked to the “OMGAWD THAT’S SO WRONG AND EVIL!” rush.
How else could you explain getting this worked up about a celebrity encouraging HERSELF not to stuff herself silly on Thanksgiving?
According to Fox News:
Some people aren’t that thankful for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Thanksgiving reminder to herself.
The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star received both backlash and praise Tuesday after she posted a series of pictures of herself in lingerie on Instagram as “a reminder not to overeat” on Thanksgiving.
“I’m just going to pin these up all over my house as a reminder not to overeat on Thursday #thanksgivingprep,” Gellar wrote in her Monday Instagram caption along with four images from a previous photoshoot.
The post got HUNDREDS of comments — most of them from butthurt randos who give a crap what someone else eats on Thanksgiving.
“Don’t make this about eating. That’s weird. Just post your pics and go,” one person wrote.
“This caption proves once more that diet culture is really everywhere and that so many women have internalized this kind of thinking. It’s really a shame,” another user wrote.
Yup. Because the “OBESE is BEAUTIFUL” messaging of the body-positivity movement is WAY healthier.
Sarah Michelle isn’t skin and bones here. She looks fantastic – and healthy. How is that a problem?
“Wow. Really shocked that a woman in a position of influence and a mother would post this s—. Is that where you place your value? On the size of your thighs? Or your protruding hip bones? Nothing positive comes from this post. Only narcissism and the bulls— theory that women need to be skinny to be acceptable. You should remove this post. Immediate unfollow from me,” another comment read.
Where did she say “women need to be skinny to be acceptable?”
She said “I prefer myself when I look like this. This is a reminder not to go crazy on the pie.”
OR IS GOING CRAZY ON THE PIE A HEALTHIER OPTION?!?!
I doubt many of these people would have gotten worked up if Sarah posted a picture gorging herself. Isn’t that unhealthy? Why is that ok?
Some did realize how absurd the outrage was:
“As a former anorexic and bulimic, I don’t see any harm or malice in the post. She looks amazing and shouldn’t be shamed for looking that way. You are also body shaming her for the way she looks. Just let her post what she wants and if you don’t like it then don’t follow her. #dontshame #sarahmichellegellar #sarahlooksawesome,” the woman commented.
And as is customary in these sorts of spats… she apologized.
“It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post,” she wrote in the comments section. “That could not be further from my intentions. I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that.”
She continued: “I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humor. Any one that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ any one on any basis. I am a champion of all people.”
Whatever.
Anyone who felt “shamed” by this really needs to check themselves.
