Chaos On Plane After First Time Passenger Confuses The Emergency Door With The Bathroom

I wouldn’t call myself a frequent-flyer, but I fly enough. I’d say I fly a handful of times a year. I try to NEVER EVER use the bathroom on a plane, but one of the last times I flew, I had to. I drank way too much coffee before the flight. The bathroom had one of those weird folding doors, and of course, I couldn’t figure out how to open it again. I was legitimately stuck in the airplane bathroom, PANICKING to myself, because I couldn’t open the door. I didn’t have my phone to alert anyone, either. I probably only messed with the door for 20 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. Eventually, a flight attendant heard my struggle and casually opened the door.

NEVER AGAIN I TELL YOU. NEVER AGAIN.

So yeah. I’ve had my troubles with airplane bathrooms, but at least I don’t mistake the emergency exit door for the bathroom.

That happened.

A passenger on a GoAir flight from Delhi to Patna, India, created “pandemonium” when he tried to open the emergency exit door midflight, claiming he mistook it for the lavatory.

Other passengers onboard the Saturday flight said the man, a first-time flier in his late 20s, began tugging on the door and said he “needed to use the washroom urgently,” the Independent reported.

However, passengers weren’t totally aware that he mistook the exit door as the bathroom and straight up wrestled him.

Sanowar Khan, the officer in charge of the local police, told the Times of India there was “pandemonium” as the man attempted to unlock the exit door. Some passengers reportedly even wrestled with the man and were injured in the struggle.

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), a branch of the Indian military in charge of airport security, told the Times that the man was able to get the door unlocked, but was unsuccessful at opening it due to the cabin pressure. However, a spokesperson from the airline said he wasn’t able to unlock it, either, according to the Independent.

Holy crap. If I saw someone messing with the emergency exit door mid-flight, I would FREAK the heck out. Guaranteed.

In the end, the man was “fined more than $11,000 and was reportedly detained for 15 days ‘for the unauthorized removal of aviation facilities.’”

Moral of the story: Just empty your bladder beforehand.
