First I hear about a mom who got arrested for taking her teenager’s phone…
and now THIS?
REALLY?!
Tammie Hedges, a North Carolina resident, offered to house low-income people’s pets while they dealt with Hurricane Florence.
I LOVE this. She was simply providing a safe and loving space until people could get re-settled and pick up their furry friends. Hedges “converted a warehouse into an impromptu shelter to care for 17 cats and 10 dogs around the clock.”
BLESS HER.
Well… I guess that’s a MAJOR problem.
According to this:
After the hurricane was gone, Wayne County Animal Services manager Frank Sauls told Hedges she needed to stop caring for the animals because she hadn’t registered the warehouse as a shelter.
You’ve gotta be kidding me.
“You can voluntarily hand over the animals or I can go get a warrant,” Hedges said Sauls told her, in an interview with her local CBS affiliate.
So now instead of being taken care of by a loving, sweet woman, they’ve been handed over to Wayne County Animal Services.
So. Messed. Up.
Hedges gave up the animals but may still face charges – although it is unclear at this time what those charges may be.
Sauls told the Goldsboro News-Argus that “If we didn’t feel like anything was being done wrong, we would not have taken [the animals],” and that it was now a matter “for the courts to decide.”
What was being done “wrong,” FRANK?!
I GET that rules are rules. I also understand that at challenging times like these, matters can be handled with COMMON SENSE.
Tammie says that no matter what – she wouldn’t have done anything differently.
“We’re not just gonna let the animals suffer and die and drown,” she said.
Bless her. It’s really heartbreaking that someone would criminalize a good deed.
But hey, as we’ve all heard before, no good deed goes unpunished.
