Last night, I sat down to watch some mindless television, chill out with the fam and cracked open the new InStyle. Now, if you’ve been here a while, you know that I am a magazine connoisseur. Since I can remember, I’ve had about 20 subscriptions to fashion, home, and lifestyle magazines, and I refuse to get rid of those monthly subscriptions in the era of the Kindle. Trees be damned. And while it pained me to cancel my subscription to Vogue back when they put Kimye on the cover (seriously, Anna Wintour, that was the last straw), I still get a glee-rush when I open up the mailbox and see that shiny September fashion edition of another, lamer rag.
It’s just one of my guilty pleasures.
Last night, I was flipping the pages of the latest InStyle, and I came across a spread that had Melanie Griffith’s name all over it, but this was the face associated with it, and I stopped, immediately took a picture and put it in our Chick-chat:
I knew the Chicklets would be like, “wait…is this Dakota Johnson’s mom?” Ashley knew of her, but Hannah didn’t know who she was, which isn’t surprising, since let’s face it – if you’re in your 20s, you probably haven’t seen many Melanie Griffith movies lately. This is just truth. For more reference, Griffith was married to Don Johnson (Dakota’s dad) and then Antonio Banderas.
She’s apparently back on the market now, if you’re so inclined, single dudes.
Now, if you are around my age, grew up in the 80s and remember Griffith from such things as Working Girl? You totally remember her. And you remember her looking like this (OMG the hair is EPIC and EVERYTHING in this movie):
Even lately, like in the past year or so, she looked like an older version of the chick who was in Working Girl. A beautiful, 60-year old woman (she just turned 61 this month). She had some wrinkles and wear and tear, but she looked like a really well-preserved and fabulously in shape, good-looking 60-year old woman. I mean, human bodies age and whatnot (well, unless you live in Hollywood and drink the Death-Becomes-Her potion).
According to this, Griffith has also recently had cancer removed from her nose and was diagnosed with epilepsy seven years ago. Both of these things suck. The cancer removal had her “terrified,” as she relies on her face for work, she says. I can totally relate to the cancer thing, as I had a big hunk of cancer taken out of my face this year, too. But I personally don’t rely on my face for work, and I was terrified because it was freaking cancer, and cancer is, by its very nature, well…terrifying. Because it’s cancer.
Anywho, this is how she looks now:
I kinda feel like she has a little Kathleen Turner Romancing-the-Stone vibe. But that’s just me. Again, if you’re under 30, you’re gonna have to Google that reference.
So, here’s my question. Are there any women in Hollywood that are aging normally these days? Or is it just expected that women there are supposed to look 35 when they’re 60 now? And like a completely different person? And is this trickling into mainstream?
Because this is also terrifying.
