This is so exciting!
I LOVE when after years of hard work – LEGAL immigrants are sworn in as citizens of our great nation.
I moved to the US when I was 12 – but was born a citizen because of my American father.
My mother, on the other hand, had to go through the whole process. I wasn’t at her swearing-in ceremony, but my family sent me PLENTY of pictures – and it was beautiful. At the end all of the brand new citizens waved little American flags around, gleefully smiling ear to ear knowing they were citizens of the greatest nation on EARTH.
My mom still keeps that little flag propped up on her desk.
Once, as she was filing her taxes for the year, I saw her pick up her flag, give it a patriotic wave, and as she inhaled at the final sum she owed said: “This is for you, Uncle Sam.”
I died laughing.
Anyway… our FLOTUS’ parents were sworn in as citizens today… and I hope they feel the same pride she does every time they see our flag. THEIR flag!
First lady Melania Trump’s parents were sworn in as U.S. citizens in New York City on Thursday.
Viktor and Amalija Knavs have been living in the United States on as permanent residents on green cards.
They arrived and departed from a Manhattan federal building escorted by Homeland Security police.
I’m ENTIRELY SURE that a bunch of leftists are going to start screaming from the rooftops how UNFAAAAIR it is that they’ve been granted citizenship but that we WANT TO KEEP ILLEGALS OUT OMG.
Well, for one, they’ve immigrated here LEGALLY… so there’s that.
Additionally, they didn’t receive special help. They did it fair and square.
They got no special treatment during the process, their attorney said.
‘The application, the process, the interview was no different from anyone else’s other than the security arrangements,’ their attorney Michael Wildes said on Thursday.
‘They would appreciate their privacy and we just thank everybody for their attention for this very important dialogue we’re having on immigration. This is an example of it going right,’ he said.
The Knavs have a residence in Maryland, near Barron Trump’s school, to help their daughter and grandson.
There are A LOT of people complaining that they POSSIBLY used the “chain migration” system Trump has adamantly spoken out against.
Melania Trump obtained her green card in 2001 and became a U.S. citizen in 2006.
Immigration experts told The Washington Post earlier this year that Viktor and Amalija Knavs likely relied on the process President Trump has derided as ‘chain migration’ to obtain their green cards.
Trump has proposed ending that options for immigrations in which American citizens and legal permanent residents are able to sponsor family members to come to the United States permanently.
I find it interesting, however, that the same people who are trying to SAVE chain migration have an issue with Melania’s parents using that system. As of now, it is legal. Those who wish to preserve that system should CELEBRATE their new citizenship instead of shred it, should they not? NEWSFLASH: Melania’s PARENTS are not the ones saying we should end chain migration. FFS!
So…Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Knav! May you use your new voting rights wisely!
