$2 Million Obama-Era Program Only Created 17 Jobs In Eastern Kentucky

Back in 2015, Obama announced a new program called “TechHire,” which was designed to “expand local tech sectors by building tech talent pipelines in communities across the country.”

That brings us to Eastern Kentucky. The program promised to create “up to 200 tech jobs in a town that depended on coal.”

How many jobs did it end up creating in Eastern Kentucky?

Over 900 people have indicated interest in BitSource, one of the education groups’ training programs in rural Kentucky. Targeting dislocated coal-industry workers, BitSource has trained and placed 11 people into employment in its pilot year.
Original Commitment

The Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP)–the Workforce Investment Board that administers federal workforce programs in 23 Eastern Kentucky counties–is leading regional convening efforts that are bringing together educational groups, nonprofits, and employer partners. This group will collectively design and establish a strategy and economic development plan to make accelerated IT training–and the resulting, high-demand jobs–available to Eastern Kentuckians, who may not have computer science degrees but have the ability and adaptability to learn and work in the IT field.

But…17 jobs. To make matters worse, these people were trained for jobs that basically don’t exist in their area or within the program. Makes loads of sense, huh?
