The Dow Jones plummeted on Monday. It broke records.
Wall Street continued a broad selloff Monday, as the Dow plunged a record 1,175 points amid inflation fears.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,345. The S&P 500 fell 113 points to 2,648. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 273 points to 6,967.
The Dow fell as much as 1,597 points in afternoon trading, the largest intraday drop in history. The blue-chip index’s 4.6% decline reflected its worst day since at least Aug. 10, 2011. Coming off its worst week in two years, the Dow wiped out its 2018 gains with its pullback Monday.
We’ve been cautioning everyone. Don’t panic. Experts say this was expected. Because the stock market has had such a long stretch of growth, it was going to readjust itself at some point. Market corrections are normal. Plus, we’re seeing a rebound. Things are leveling out.
The Dow fell about 100 points at the opening bell Wednesday before bouncing back for a 200-point gain. It’s a significant improvement following three straight days of sharp declines at the open. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq advanced modestly.
On Tuesday, Wall Street staged a dramatic turnaround. After sinking 567 points early in the day and stumbling into correction territory, the Dow ended the day with a mirror-image gain of 567 points.
The powerful bounce has given hope to the bulls that the market has begun to find a bottom after extreme selling in recent days.
Everyone’s been dying for Trump to comment on this, because he’s touted the high numbers in the past. Some say he’s been a giant hypocrite for not “owning” this, but I could easily flip it and say that Democrats are acting like giant hypocrites. After all, they said the GOOD was a direct result of Obama’s economy.
Just sayin’. Two can play at that game.
Anyway, the moment we’ve all been waiting for. It has happened. President Trump finally tweeted about the stock market.
In the “old days,” when good news was reported, the Stock Market would go up. Today, when good news is reported, the Stock Market goes down. Big mistake, and we have so much good (great) news about the economy!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 7, 2018
He’s basically saying that the economy is strong, despite the stock market’s little roller coaster ride.
I’m sure this isn’t his last word on the matter.
