It’s awful to lose a pet. When my almost 20-year old cat had to be put down due to cancer, we had a vet come to the house to do it, so she’d be at home, with us, in a comfortable place, and as at ease as she could possibly be.
I sobbed, obviously, before it happened, as it was happening, and after it happened. And I was so grateful to the vet and his tech, who were endlessly compassionate, and who sent us a sympathy card some days later.
When I think about the fact that someday, I’m gonna face the end of my dogs’ lives – even if it’s a fleeting thought – I well up immediately. It was hard enough to lose a cat that I’d had for nearly 20 years. But my dogs? I love them so much harder than I loved my cat, and I loved my cat a lot.
Daisy knows what I’m talking about. She had to put down her beloved Jeb several weeks ago, and she also had a vet come to the house. It’s a comfort, somehow, to be able to give your pet a familiar and soothing setting in their final moments, as horribly difficult as it is. And even though we know and appreciate how kind and empathetic vets are, it’s easy to forget how difficult the end of a pet’s life is on them.
But this video reminded me. Oh my LORD it reminded me.
Grab a crying towel and settle in.
Now go hug your dogs. 🙂
