Apple’s Diversity Chief Forced To Step Down… For Saying Something Positive About White Men

A while ago I wrote about how Denise Young Smith, Apple’s now FORMER Diversity Chief, caused OUTRAGE for saying that a group of white men can be diverse.

I’m going to reiterate a lot of what I said then now, because I stand by it. This actually drives me up the wall.

I grew up in Mexico. My mother is Mexican, my father is American. When I moved to the US, I was often sought out for clubs and student activity groups because they wanted to increase their “diversity.” While I think of myself as a White Hispanic, my school asked that I check off exclusively “hispanic” on standardized tests, to increase their diversity standing.

I always told them that I had to offer in terms of “diversity” wasn’t my race, but rather having grown up in a different country, in a traditional Catholic family, I draw from a different set of experiences than many of my American-born peers. Nowadays I think the most “diverse” thing about me isn’t my racial makeup, but rather that I’m an outspokenly conservative millennial.

In a society that has long stressed that race is skin deep, it seems rather retrograde that race is ALSO considered the end-all-be-all of diversity.

A room full of white men could easily be more diverse in their set of experiences, values, and ideals than a group of racially un-homogenous people who all grew up in the same area, with the same socioeconomic standing, political inclination, and religion.

A white person and a black person under the same conditions may have A LOT more in common than two people of the same race who had completely different upbringings.

She basically expressed that same sentiment… and now she’s out of a job.

Apple’s diversity chief is stepping down just six months after taking on the job after declaring that being minority or a woman are not the only criteria for diversity.

Denise Young Smith only took on the role of vice president of diversity and inclusion in May.

‘There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blond men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation,’ the inaugural diversity chief said during a One Young World Summit in Bogotá, Colombia.

‘Diversity is the human experience,’ she said. ‘I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT.’

She was then forced to apologized for her remarks and told staff that they ‘were not representative of how I think about diversity or how Apple sees it.’

‘For that, I’m sorry,’ she said in a company email. ‘More importantly, I want to assure you Apple’s view and our dedication to diversity has not changed.’

Smith will now leave the company at the end of the year and will be replaced by Christie Smith (no relation), who worked at Deloitte.

‘We deeply believe that diversity drives innovation,’ an Apple spokesman said a statement. ‘We’re thrilled to welcome an accomplished leader like Christie Smith to help us continue the progress we’ve made toward a more diverse workplace.

‘Meaningful change takes time,’ the company said in its diversity report. ‘We’re proud of our accomplishments, but we have much more work to do.’

So from now on, no one is allowed to say that white people can be diverse.
