Social Media has definitely added a new level of “pressure” to young people’s lives.
How? It takes “Keeping Up With The Jones” into overdrive. Every day people are BLASTED with perfectly curated images of other people’s vacations, workouts, and “dream engagements.” From the outside, you’d think EVERYONE has the perfect life… other than you.
Many of us millennials are fully aware of this, and while we participate in social media, we remind ourselves that A) life is not a competition, and B) It’s easy to get a distorted idea of what someone’s life looks like when all you ever see is the highlight reel.
That being said, we’re not immune to ALL of Social Media’s pitfalls. Exhibit A: I’m addicted to selfies.
That’s me and Hannah. Have me mentioned we’re actually BFFs in real life? We are. It’s magical.
If you think that’s the only shot we took… you’re wrong. It took at least 5-6 snaps before we had one we were both happy with…. and that’s social media for ya!
Anyway… one girl is trying to fight back against this “everyone should look absolutely perfect all the time” thing… so she came up with this:
Get rich or die chinning 🤷🏻♀️ wishing I had the 🗝 to a place like this 😩

Posing for a selfie can be tedious and embarrassing, particularly when you’re in public. While there’s no shame in taking a memorable photo, there is definitely a little shame in crafting a painstaking pose for the sole purpose of making yourself look unrealistically fabulous.
Enter “chinning,” the new Instagram trend which will hopefully relieve us all of the pressure to look perfect in every selfie.
“Chinning” is an Instagram fad which was proudly kickstarted by Michelle Liu to clap back against the standards of Instagram “perfection” that are constantly littering our newsfeeds.
Liu started the trend when she was documenting her world travels, and eventually created an entire Instagram account devoted to the act of “chinning.” The account has over 8,000 followers, and people are absolutely geeking out over Michelle’s new take on the selfie.
Apparently, Liu has been perfecting the pose for years prior to her Instagram fame. “My chinning entertained my friends all through middle school, high school and college, at which point I decided to share my chin with the world,” Liu told Mic in an email.
And yes…. people everywhere are following her lead:

There’s A LOT more where that came from…
My take? It’s nice to see people not take themselves so seriously.
What do you think?
