So this is happening now:
If you just asked yourself, “Self, what in the hell did I just watch?” then congratulations. You’re not alone, because I had the same reaction.
According to this, little Nemis here – a.k.a “Lactatia” (and no, that’s not a new kind of yogurt – that’s this kid’s drag name) – is being “celebrated” by both the “bawdy, homosexuality-infused world of female impersonators” and his own parents. His mom does his makeup, because she’s super supportive that way. He’s eight years old and he’s been cross-dressing since he was seven, dontchaknow.
His parents, Jessica Mélançon and Coriander Golden, don’t take him to soccer practice or other “regular” boy stuff on the weekends. Instead, Nemis goes to “Vogue” classes.
As for Nemis being gay?
Nemis’ parents say the boy “understands that a majority of [drag] Queens are gay.” They told Best Kept Montreal, “It’s something we’ve talked a lot about at length because he expressed his concern that people wouldn’t think he was a ‘real’ drag queen or take him seriously because he doesn’t feel like he’s gay.”
“Maybe he will [adopt a ‘gay’ identity] in the future? Who knows,” they said. “Luckily for him, he has his whole life to figure out that aspect of himself, but for the time being, he’s content to find heels in his size and own his [sh-t]!”
Yeeeeah. No parental influence there at all. Did I mention that he’s eight years old?
Anywho, here’s more of what his parents had to say about Nemis:
Did we know it would lead to him being passionate about becoming the greatest drag queen the world has ever seen? No, but we were one hundred percent certain that Nemis was a natural performer, had the ability to captivate a crowd and was the most self-aware person we knew.
Obviously, we’re not like most moms and dads. Instead of Saturday morning soccer practice, we have Vogue classes. When we go clothes shopping it’s equal parts black skinny jeans and skulls as it is sequins and tulle. We talk ollies, grinding and dropping in- he’s pretty dedicated to his skateboard, just as much as contouring and tuck tape!
Yeeeeah. I’m sure y’all talk to your 8-year olds about tuck tape and ollies and drag and gayness, right? Because of course. This is normal conversation with 8-year olds…
Now, you can go on ahead and say what you want to say in the comments. I’ll leave you to it. For me, this isn’t about a kid being gay. It’s not about a kid being transgender, even.
For me, this video – this whole thing – is about parenting. I found myself wondering…what’s really going on here? And what’s up with these parents?
As a mother, I have a biological instinct to protect my children. This is natural and powerful for me, at least. And as I watched that child up on that stage? As I watched an 8-year old boy covered in a bunch of makeup and adult-like clothing? Being ogled up on a stage like that, being told by a dude in a dress that he’s “f*cking adorable” while that dude in a dress is showcasing that little boy in front of a bunch of other dudes? You know, in some drag place somewhere?
As a mom, I don’t get this at all. It made me want to grab that child off the stage, because what in the hell are these people thinking? This child is EIGHT. He’s a CHILD, for crying out loud. I think this video isn’t just inappropriate in several ways – it’s mostly just an exhibit in subpar parenting.
But listen – it’s 2017. So I’ll go ahead and wait for folks to call me un-enlightened or non-progressive or some kind of new “ist” or something.
Get in line.
