Swiss State Decides To Ban Burqas, Thoughts?

The Swiss Swiss state of Ticino recently approved a measure, which bans women from wearing burqas in public.

Women who wear full face veils in public in a Swiss state could be fined up to £6,500 under new rules imposed by the local government.

Females muslims will be banned from wearing the burqa in shops, restaurants or public buildings in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino.

The local government in the southern Swiss state approved the ban after a referendum in September 2013 saw two in three voters backing the move.

Interestingly enough, they don’t make exceptions for tourists. So if you’re a burqa wearing Muslim woman traveling in that area, watch out.

The minimum fine is 100 francs (£65) and women can be given a penalty of up to 10,000 francs (£6,500).

The Swiss Parliament says the ban does not violate federal law but it is not yet known when the new rules will come into force.

France has similar laws on the books. A woman can be fined anywhere from £35 to  £150 for wearing the garment.

I personally think anyone who wears a burqa is fundamentally jacked up. Then again, I’m just your average sexist bigoted racist Islamophobe, so what do I know?

What do you think about this? I definitely don’t see this flying in America (we have the First Amendment and all), but I don’t feel bad for these European countries. They brought this upon themselves and now have to deal with the consequences.
