The US Is Granting Asylum To People Involved In The Caravan Of Migrants

Remember the giant caravan of migrants that has been making its way to the US border? Although there were reports that it disbanded into chunks, it didn’t stop the momentum. People continued on the journey, jumping on freight trains to get here.

I know some of them truly want a better life, but who doesn’t? It’s simply not fair to LEGAL immigrants and the American taxpayers.

Unfortunately, our border is totally porous. The US has allowed dozens of these people to enter the country. At this point, we’re up to at least 158.

TIJUANA (Reuters) – Dozens more Central American caravan migrants were let into the United States to begin pleading their case for asylum on Thursday despite sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, bringing the total to 158 since last weekend.

Seventy men, women and children were allowed into the crowded port of entry border crossing early Thursday morning, according to Alex Mensing, a caravan organizer with advocacy group Pueblos Sin Fronteras.

Another 62 migrants were still waiting for a chance to begin the asylum process, he said.

Keep in mind, that number doesn’t even include the immigrants who opted to enter the country illegally altogether. Who KNOWS how many have managed to enter that way.

Luisa, 44, from Nicaragua said she was happy to see the eight migrants go. She is still waiting on the Mexico side and saw them walk into the US.

“There’s hope, they let in eight people,” Luisa said. “We were sad when no one was allowed in.”

Adan, the 18 yr old from El Salvador, who was allowed to request asylum said earlier today that he was preparing himself to meet with immigration agents.

“Attorneys have told me I have a strong case and that there is a good chance I’ll win. I’m determined to fight my case.”

Last night Grupos Beta and immigration authorities offered to take people sleeping outside to shelters but people refused. They didn’t want to miss their chance to ask for asylum or let up on pressure for CBP to do so.

A pair of migrants from the caravan, who spent the night sleeping outside the metal doors to the US, asked CBP agents this morning if they could ask for asylum. They were told in English “no entry.” Last night 8 out of 24 waiting at doors were allowed in.

Six more people from the caravan were allowed to ask for asylum a little bit ago. As well as about 25 Mexicans.

A few hours away from hitting the 48-hour mark for waiting 25 asylum seekers from the caravan have now been able to ask for refuge. Eleven people were allowed to ask for asylum a little bit ago after the group from this morning.

.@PuebloSF says there are still about 125 asylum seekers from the caravan waiting to be allowed into the US to seek protection. That’s in addition to who didn’t come on the caravan from Africa, Mexico, and Haiti who are also trying to meet with border agents.

Correction: Organizers say it was actually 28 migrants from the Central American caravan who were allowed into the US for processing by Customs and Border Protection at 10AM. Not 22.

A total of 158 asylum seekers from the caravan have been able to turn themselves in to Customs and Border Protection. 70 were allowed in at 9AM today.

Another group of 20 women and children just walked into the port of entry in the hopes of turning themselves to claim asylum and be processed.
