Megyn Kelly delivered a monologue on her show this morning, and it was obviously from her heart. She ripped on everyone in this, y’all – no one was spared. The National Rifle Association, the ACLU, politicians, the state of mental health and how we handle it in this country, Trump’s border wall?, the fact that guns are legal but being able to pray in school is NOT…

I’m sure some people will find this all over the place – I found it depressing, to be honest. But as a Mom, I will admit, there are parts of it where I’m right there with her. PARTS of it, mind you. The part where she thinks the $25 billion for the border wall should be redirected towards this problem, just to show resolve? No. I think we can show resolve as a country without throwing $25 billion at this problem and by default, discarding the border wall. I think this is a several-layered problem, as she so passionately pointed out in her monologue.
But I am absolutely with her on the part of feeling like a Mom who’s playing Russian roulette when I send my baby girl to school these days. I’m terrified for my child – I’m terrified for your children – and I am now in the position of teaching my daughter self-defense at SCHOOL and how to handle herself in a situation like this. This is where I am as a Mom, and I’ll fully admit that it’s not a pleasant place to be. Lord knows that my parents never felt like that or had to even THINK about these things when I went to school back in the 80s. So what in the hell has changed since then?
Well, everything, in my opinion.
Our culture. The people in it. Our entertainment has become increasingly violent – movies and video games. The way we treat each other has changed – if you don’t believe me, spend a day on Twitter. The way we view and revere life has absolutely changed. The way people in this country discard/view faith (see this if you don’t believe me). The way we parent and the way that kids are parentED. The breakdown of families. Mental health and how we handle it in this country – we are in desperate need of reform. The way social media has permeated our culture to the point of breaking down interpersonal relationships. The way no one talks to one another face-to-face anymore – politicians included. The way we have been conditioned to tolerate EVERYTHING these days, simply because it has to be tolerated for the sake of not offending someone. And by that, I mean that we have been conditioned into believing that everybody and everything requires tolerance now. Well, I was raised in an America where inappropriate and dangerous behavior shouldn’t be tolerated. The fact that this shooter was out there posting the garbage he was posting on his Instagram page…the talk about animal abuse…the gun and knife pictures on his social media? The kid was. A. COMPLETE. FREAK. And nowadays, we just let everyone let their freak flags fly, because everyone deserves to do so? Nowadays, this stuff is put out on social media, and it almost seems untouchable. WHY? Why can’t law enforcement go pick him up, lock him in a room, and question that kid until he ultimately ends up in a mental facility where he obviously belongs. Supervised and on medication. Why can’t we profile? As if we’re all supposed to just let sick and twisted behavior go, simply because it’s in pictures on a screen. I mean, it’s on social media, so we just tolerate it, right?
To me, anyway, things have changed.
It’s not the same America as it was thirty years ago. It’s an America where I’m having to formulate a way to teach my 8-year old daughter how to be defensive in a school shooting situation. The biggest problem I had as an 8-year old was whether or not my Big Wheel was going to make it through the summer. My daughter has the weight of “how do I get out of a school shooting alive” scenario to deal with.
There are parents right now who don’t have their babies to hug tonight. I cannot begin to imagine what they’re going through. It makes me cry every time I think about it. There are no words to describe how much I hurt for these Moms and Dads….and grandmas and grandpas and sisters and brothers and aunties and uncles and friends…
You can tell me it’s just the guns – well, OK. Go ahead and pass more gun control laws. Do it, let the politicians pat themselves on the backs, and then see if any of the bad guys and psychos follow those laws. I believe you’ll be very disappointed.
Tell me that you believe the NRA is a terrorist organization. Well, OK again. They’ve been around since the late 1800s, mind you. They were around when I was in high school in the late 1980s, back when we didn’t have locks on our high school doors, and I felt perfectly safe. Not a care in the world. Back it those days, guys drove to school and parked in the school parking lots with guns fully loaded and placed in their gun racks so they could go hunting after classes let out. Nothing ever happened.
The NRA isn’t a terrorist organization. They’re just a very convenient scapegoat.
Because this is a multi-faceted culture problem. But it’s easier to point the fingers at something else when it’s really us that is decaying.
And we’ve got some serious work to do to make it right.
