Holy crap.
So the other day, I wrote a silly post about Man Colds. You can read it right here.
With the exception of maybe 1-2 people in our commenting community here on the website, most all of you read the post in the spirit in which it was written, because y’all are awesome, and you get us. You know from reading our posts and listening to our radio show that we love men, that we are huge defenders of men, that we worry about the loss of masculinity in our culture, and that the phrase “toxic masculinity” is ridiculous to us. You know that, you get it, you appreciate it, and you respond accordingly.
But on Facebook? OMG, you guys. There was an UNPRECEDENTED amount of butthurt from men (and women!) who reacted to that Man Cold post as if I’d called for the immediate mass extermination of males from the planet or something.
Now, before you read some of these comments, make sure you read my original post. Because if you read it with even the most basic level of reading comprehension skills, you’ll notice a few things.
1. It’s primarily about my lack of sympathy for man colds and my own personal experience
2. It also features several tweets from women who’ve shared similar experiences
3. There is no mention, in that post, of any study or science. There is no generalization or characterization that suggests ALL MEN behave in the same way when they have colds. There’s my experience, and the experience of the women whose tweets were included, and that’s it.
Ok. So now you have that background. Just LOOK at what has exploded onto the Facebook thread about this post.
The veteran who chimed in (and I thank him for his service), Actually Suggested that my original post was BULLYING, you guys. This is a guy who served in the military. He’s a DUDE. And yet, he is incapable of recognizing his own wimpiness (to borrow his word) on this very topic.
Plus, the dude bringing up stats? Please.
Because DAYUM. The fact that any dude felt that the original post was “running down men” is just absolutely preposterous.
Still no answer. Probably because the original post didn’t stereotype.
We really did do an entire segment on our show about this, because we were in a state of disbelief about the overreaction. Listen here.
Thankfully, along came Jeff.
And he wasn’t the only one. Plenty of other dudes who have common sense, don’t take themselves too seriously, and who get our sense of humor were happy to admit that they act kind puny when they have man colds. They played along, and I love them for it. And of course, there were tons of women who commiserated, because as I suggested in the original post, this isn’t an uncommon phenomenon.
I think all the dudes who got butthurt over the original post should get together with all the chicks who get butthurt when men joke about PMS. They’re all made for each other.
There was one comment from a dude that really caught me off guard. I tried to respond to it, but he deleted it before my response would post. I took a screenshot, if only to prove to myself that I hadn’t imagined it, because WHAT A COMPLETE PR*CK.
Yeah. That happened. I mean, I guess it’s good that he self-censored, but you know that dude’s a cheater, and I feel sorry for his wife.
You know what all this reminds me of? That hilarious video of what it would look like if Dudes Acted Like Dogs we posted some time ago. Remember that? The one with this video?
The response that we got to that video was similar to the one about Man Colds. People were legit offended. Just read this.
There were comments about that video that included these:
“Come on ladies really? this is demeaning to men… you never think a video like this was funny if it was 2 women acting like dogs.”
“Maybe it’s my age, but I don’t think this is funny at all. I’m so tired of men being portrayed as incompetent and stupid, and I refuse to buy products who portray “dads” as morons in their ads. Our dads, husbands, sons and grandsons, etc. deserve better.”
“Pretty low class….expect more from you.”
“This is insulting to men. If you put women in as the dogs, you would have a law suit.”
Seriously, WTF is wrong with people? TWO DUDES made that video, for crying out loud.
EVERYONE CALM DOWN.
