Party Celebrating $1.7M Public Toilet Scheduled to be Built in SF Canceled After Backlash

Talk about a bunch of party poopers…

Apparently, throwing a party to celebrate a singular public toilet taking three years and almost $2 million to build falls into the no-no category.

People really need to start running things by me. I could have told you that and saved you the PR sh*tstorm…

From The Blaze:

City and state officials in San Francisco, California, cancelled a celebration for a public toilet that cost $1.7 million and will take years to build after they received massive online backlash.

California state Representative Matt Haney told the San Francisco Chronicle that he voted for the city to pay the cost for the bathroom in the Noe Valley Town Square and had planned to attend the event to celebrate the outlandishly expensive plan but canceled it after reading the news coverage.

“The number, it sounded shockingly high to me, and I think your article has revealed that their process around this is broken and the number is inexplicable,” Haney said to the Chronicle.

Haney said the neighborhood has been asking for a public restroom since 2016. The $1.7 million plan to build the toilet was scheduled to be completed in three years, in 2025, or nine years since the neighborhood asked for it.

While many on social media mocked San Francisco officials for the debacle, at least one reporter defended the city and excoriated the critics.

“To all center-right ideologues bashing the $1.7 million public toilet in #SanFrancisco — show us your actual, concrete, real-world data on how much it would cost you to build a public restroom for a major U.S. city. Show us the details, the cost estimates–or stop whining,” tweeted Christopher Cook.

He later deleted the tweet.

While this may come as a surprise to Commiefornia politicians and civil servants… I’m thinking the underlying issue is not the price itself.

I still think that $1.7 million and a three-year timeline is absolutely ridiculous. However, people are probably more concerned that this very expensive chamber pot will end up looking like the one in Portland that’s shown in the tweet below.

You’re gonna have to look at your own risk. I honestly wouldn’t recommend because it’s incredibly nasty, but I feel like it’s an accurate example of what people could be in for…

When the very real possibility of the homeless population using it as a drug spot is considered along with the price tag and timeline, this whole thing just seems… loodicrous…

Can you tell I came up with that myself?

What I did find hilarious, though, is the Twitter parody account created in honor of this non-existent toilet.

As a “center-right ideologue” I accept Mr. Cook’s challenge. In short, I propose that you take two existing Port-a-Potties that cost around $1000. Replace the door and frame to make them more able to withstand abuse. Maybe another $1000. Then insert temporary bracing and attach a lifting hook on top. Then encase both Potties in three inches of reinforced concrete. Give them a smooth finish. Then allow a local graffiti artist to decorate them and finish with a good concrete sealant. Then remove the bracing, locate them in the appropriate location. Maybe another $1000 or so. Have a Port-a-Potty vacuum truck visit them once or twice a week to hose them out and down and to empty the repository. Give the locals cattle prods to convince the local homeless and addicts to move along instead of camping in or around them. Guarantee it would be less than $10,000 for each Port-a-Potty.

That photo is like something I have in nightmares. You know, when you’re trying to find a clean toilet and there’s always something wrong with every single one of them. Please tell me the $1.7 mil is for a whole building with about 50 stalls each, not just one freakin’ toilet.

    Hi, LT!!
“Devotion” is coming out in a movie. I’m hoping “Spearhead” is next.

      Hi!!!

Unfortunately, from what I can understand, that’s the price tag for a 150 sq ft building with just one toilet… but that’s government for ya 😉

That’s AWESOME news about “Devotion”!!! SUPER pumped for that! I hope they do Spearhead next too, as that one’s my favorite 🙂
