Congrats, But Student Loan Forgiveness Already Existed…

It will probably shock none of you to learn that while Democrats are patting themselves on the back for creating a student loan forgiveness plan that will cost American $330 BILLION, or $2,100 each taxpayer, student loan forgiveness programs already exist. And they don’t bankrupt our nation.

Whether you’re like Natalie who saved every penny from a young age or me and my kids who applied for every scholarship, grant, high school college credit, or work study opportunity, most Americans know college is going to cost money, and they plan accordingly. If you plan to go, you know the bills don’t get paid by fairies– that money has to come from somewhere. Everyone already had the opportunity to apply for these programs BEFORE they took out student loans, but even if they didn’t, they still have access to various kinds of student loan forgiveness programs.

These days, for some unknown reason, people know college costs money, they take out excessive loans and go anyway, and then they whine about the money they owe and how their useless degree in the psychology of cat sweater knitting doesn’t make them enough money to pay it back. Yes, so sad.

I blame the outrage over our lack of “free education” on socialist college professors and boastful Europeans, neither of whom should ever be taken seriously. Europeans don’t have “free” college when they have 40% taxes to pay for it and much lower rates of college enrollment. Don’t you have someone to arrest over offensive social media posts?? College professors never leave campus, they live in their own worlds where they make up definitions and apparently internet searches don’t exist. Please just shush.

Every. Single. State. already has at least one student loan forgiveness program, except South Dakota. Some state have as many as nine different programs. Forgiveness in these programs can be reached a variety of ways, ranging from working for a nonprofit to buying a home in that state. Of course, this covers actual degree programs like teaching and healthcare, not the study of the cultural appropriation of hair. Still, if you go to college in California and your professor has encouraged you to protest for student loan forgiveness but hasn’t told you about the three state programs that already exist there, you have to wonder what else they are aren’t telling you. Because they simply don’t know squat if it’s not covered in Socialism 101.

I can only wonder how much this administration gets away with because they have so many ignorant activists on their side. Joe Biden, mumbling into his third pudding cup of the day, may not have any idea that student loan forgiveness already exists. But someone, somewhere in his inner circle HAD to have come across this information, if only by accident. Instead of educating the public on the avenues already available to them, they want to stick a feather in Biden’s hat of achievements. But it’s a dunce cap, it’s on backwards, and he’s wearing it over his eyes.

Congratulations, you created something that already existed, but in the most expensive and least efficient way possible. And you’re celebrating.

I hate it here.

This line is golden: “Of course, this covers actual degree programs like teaching and healthcare, not the study of the cultural appropriation of hair.”

If someone registers for what will amount to a useless degree, they don’t deserve to be eligible for loans. If they want a loan, they should have to register for a degree that will get them a solid career when they graduate. Education, Engineering, Accounting, Pre-Law, Pre-Med, Journalism (if it can even be called that anymore–but journalism is pushing it bc newbies make squat), etc. Philosophy and Art (if not Graphic Design), etc won’t bring in paychecks. But … now I sound like a socialist limiting what ppl can get a loan for. Damn.

When one is in their senior year of high school, they should consider whether or not if it’s necessary to attend college. Other things to consider is the relevance of a degree to their jobs/careers. I was a commercial art student and as I look back on it, a degree in art isn’t as practical as, say a certificate from a trade school, in plumbing, hvac, electrical, and auto mechanics.

    tangent-

    >I blame the outrage over our lack of “free education”

The sad thing is there is plenty of free education out there. Coursera has plenty of free classes (I’ve taken short courses from Stanford, Yale, Ohio State, and a few others), MIT and Yale have complete courses on YouTube, Google has a free programming course, public libraries, etc. The problem is HR doesn’t accept that, they want that piece of paper. Without it, your application/résumé won’t even be looked at. No matter how skilled you are, no matter your potential, you will probably not get a chance with HR for any decent job (I was told that by a few HR reps). At least that is how it was 9 years ago when I set my county (and likely state) record for applications (over 500) without an offer (and only about 5 call backs, 3 interviews).

To fix the college problem, we have to first fix the HR problem.

I’ll bite on your tangent, Mike. I was doing accounting work for ten YEARS after graduating from college. I did not have a degree specifically in accounting, though I did have a bachelors, which is likely why they agreed to interview me for the job in the first place, no doubt. During the interview, no one asked me if I had an accounting degree. No one asked what my majors were; it never came up. However, shortly after I was hired, the company insisted I needed a B.A. in accounting despite the fact I obviously had relevant prior experience and was currently doing the SAME WORK. At least they partially paid for the second degree, this time in accounting, which did end up paying off in the end. But it only made me wonder why they hired me if the accounting degree was so important, and yet they never asked me about it in the first place. They only saw I had completed college and that checked the box enough at least to get me an interview.

        >checked the box enough at least to get me an interview.

Yep. They use it as a filter to decide if they are even going to look at you. That forces everyone to go, which raises the price (demand goes up). Think about how much talent is wasted or not realized because people aren’t given a chance.

An example that sticks in my mind- A few hundred applications in, I applied for a basic, entry level secretary for $10-12ish/hr. A job almost anybody could do with half a day of on the job training but they required a four year degree.

Statistically, I’ve heard that for every dollar of student loan money that the government makes available, tuition goes up by 60 cents…
