Simone Biles is the greatest gymnast in the world. In the history of the world. She has worked incredibly hard for her entire life to be the best, and she unequivocally is.
And now she is the latest victim of radical woke progressive ideals like anti-meritocracy, equity, and socialism.
“Am I in a league of my own? Yes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t credit me for what I’m doing. They keep asking us to do more difficulty and to give more artistry, give more harder skills. So we do, and then they don’t credit it, and I don’t think that’s fair.”
Biles herself told the New York Times that a factor in the unfair decision is that “they don’t want the field to be too far apart.”
They say it’s to protect the athletes. So that athletes aren’t trying to do things that will injure them. The International Gymnastics Federation statement on the issue said,
“There are many examples in the Code where decisions have been made to protect the gymnasts and preserve the direction of the discipline.”
Even this statement admits that they are manipulating the “direction of the discipline.” They want to maintain control over the abilities of the gymnasts. As an aside, I’m curious if any sports federations would say something like this to athletes like Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps?
The reality is, they are discouraging greatness. They are devaluing the meritocracy upon which the concept of Olympic competition is founded. You work to be the best and you are evaluated based on your performance. But now they are catering to whiners. When you cater to the victimhood mentality in any given discipline, you reduce the overall quality of that discipline. And our society is now in the business of catering to those who whine about equity.
I call it the “lowest common denominator phenomenon.” It also happens to be the reality of socialism in practice. It’s where you punish greatness, success, and merit and therefore force everyone to accomplish only the bare minimum required to be considered “success.” No one is willing to do more than the bare minimum, or hover at the lowest common denominator, because it will be wasted effort. No greater success will come from the greater effort, so why put forth greater effort at all?
What incentive does Simone Biles have to be the absolute best if she is going to essentially be handicapped for it?
Why will she work hard to be the best if she won’t reap the rewards of her hard work?
Why will anyone in any sport or area of expertise? Why would any gymnast, at this point, work to be any better than the minimum required to be at the olympics?
Now that the world has been told that greatness and merit will be punished with altered scoring while lesser gymnasts will be rewarded for their lesser ability by being exempt from the altered scoring in order to level the playing field. And how will that make other gymnasts feel to know that the greatest in their discipline is being intentionally kept down? If someone else beats Simone Biles, will that feel like a legitimate win? Will it feel like they truly earned it? Gymnasts will only work as hard as required to maintain the minimum requirement to qualify for that newly leveled playing field. No one will try to raise the level of the playing field because they will be cut down to size. There will be no advancement or elevation in the sport because there will be no incentive nor reward for success.
It’s called equality of outcome.
It’s called “equity.”
It’s called Socialism.
Now apply this concept to any area of society. Engineering. Music performance. Entertainment. You name it.
And what a cruel joke that it is an incredibly talented, strong, inspirational black American woman who is discriminated against by the exact socialist equity that radical woke progressives have been fighting for under the guise of “progress.”
