American Olympian Turns Back On Flag During National Anthem

OPINION | This article contains political commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Did everyone see Gwen Berry’s display of anti-American values at the Olympic trials on Saturday? If you didn’t, Berry won the bronze medal for hammer throwing at the Olympic trials. Yet, it’s not her athletic performance that she’s being recognized for. It’s the fact that she turned her back on the flag during the National Anthem. She had this to say:

“I feel like it was setup,” Berry said. “I feel like they did that on purpose, and I was pissed, to be honest. I was thinking about what should I do. Eventually, I just stayed there and just swayed. I put my shirt over my head. It was real disrespectful. I know they did that on purpose, but it’ll be all right. I see what’s up.”

Ah, yes. A set-up. I’m sure the Olympic Committee had Berry in mind when they played the Anthem at its regularly scheduled time. They held a meeting and said, “how can we make Gwen uncomfortable today?” I think it’s more plausible that she made a scene so no one would remember she came in third…

Berry thought that the NATIONAL ANTHEM would not be played at a sporting event for our NATION’S best athletes.

Am I missing something here?

The hatred of America by American Olympians makes ZERO sense to me. If you hate the country, everything it stands for, and everything it was founded upon, then why do you want to go to the Olympics anyway? If activism is your passion, then why not take out the middle-man?

The Olympics used to have an appeal. The whole country used to come together to tune in and support the men and women who represent this great nation on the world’s stage. Now it’s nothing but a parade of self-righteous political activists. Please take politics out of sports. It ruins the experience for everyone.

If you’re embarrassed of our country, then don’t go to the Olympics.

Actually, I’ll do you one better: find a different country to live in. If we’re so bad, then there must be a country that better represents your thoughts and feelings.

Being an Olympian is the highest honor that an athlete can achieve. If Berry doesn’t want to represent us, then I’m sure we can find another able-bodied athlete who loves our country. We don’t need another hateful, activist athlete. We already have plenty of those.

In case you were wondering what stance the White House took on this matter…
