John McAfee Found Dead in Spanish Prison

John McAfee, founder of McAfee Antivirus Protection, 2016 Libertarian presidential candidate, and Actual Most Interesting Man in the World was found dead by apparent suicide in his prison cell in Barcelona.

McAfee was found dead in his cell in a prison near Barcelona on Wednesday around 1 p.m. ET and a medical examiner went to the scene, a spokeswoman for the Superior Court of Catalonia told CNN. She said the cause of death is under investigation.
A statement from the Catalonia regional government Justice Department, which manages prisons there, said that prison medical personnel and guards attempted to perform life-saving procedures after finding McAfee, but were unsuccessful. The statement said “everything indicates” that McAfee could have died by suicide.
McAfee was found dead shortly after his extradition to the United States was approved in order to face charges of tax evasion– which, in all likelihood, he was probably guilty of.

Now, the question of whether it’s more illegal to demand taxes or evade them aside, an apparent suicide in prison has every reason to raise eyebrows after what happened to Jeffrey Epstein.
It predictably did not take long for the internet to be abuzz with conspiracies of his actual cause of death, many of which seem as plausible as theories that Epstein didn’t kill himself. For one, McAfee’s widow Janice doesn’t buy the whole suicide explanation.
“I blame the US authorities for this tragedy. Because of these politically motivated charges against him. My husband is now dead,” Janice said during a statement.
“His last words to me were: I love you and I will call you in the evening” Janice said. “He would have never quit this way, he would never take his life in this way, ever.”
Now, as a person with clinical depression, I fully understand that many suicides take loved ones entirely by surprise. And the idea of being charged with a “crime” you don’t believe should be illegal would take an emotional toll on anyone. But I think Mrs. McAfee is being very rational in arranging a second autopsy after the “official” one.
And if Janice McAfee’s comments were all that suggested foul play, we probably wouldn’t give it more than a passing thought. But there’s more.

I mean. . . sure, things change, but it’s a little hard to not take something so direct at face value.
And even if it was despair that took him, Edward Snowden offers a perspective that supports the idea that, even if McAfee died by his own hand, his blood is on those of the U.S. government:

Look. I’m not saying McAfee was suicided a la Jeffrey Epstein. (I am 100000% saying Epstein didn’t kill himself, but that’s old news/beside the point.) I think suicide makes a good amount of sense in this case, and the circumstances certainly aren’t as shady as other comparable situations (Epstein). But it’s a tragedy and it is not clear cut.
In honor of John McAfee and his memory, I leave you with what I have to assume is the legacy he would want to be remembered by.
