Early this morning, utter moron Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan’s current Governor, posted a picture depicting Stacey Abrams as Jesus Christ on a lit candle.
The candle shows Abram’s clutching what typically would be a Bible, with a holy halo and Georgia’s outline above her.
This mockery goes against the Catholic tradition of lighting prayer candles, otherwise known as votive candles. Other Christian denominations also similarly use candles.
Typically, the candles are meant to represent God’s presence in one’s home or during one’s prayers. The candle is usually attributed to God’s light upon the world, therefore giving life against the darkness, which is death. The following image is an example.
This is not the first time blasphemous candles have had a strong backlash. Celebrity votive candles have entered the scene previously, with Vox even covering the issues back in 2019.
There is a dangerous precedent set when public ‘leaders’ directly mock and insult the religions of people they are supposed to represent.
As Jesus said on the cross when He died for our sins, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,” (Luke 23:34).
