ABC is reporting that a Florida teen has been arrested in connection with the Twitter hack on July 15th.
The hack forced blue checks marks to shut down their ability to tweet. The attack affected a number of high profile accounts by locking down their ability to tweet anything but a link to a Bitcoin scam.
“High-profile Twitter accounts including Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Uber and Apple have been hacked in an internal breach that is believed to be one of the largest social media attacks ever.
Hackers claimed to have paid one or more Twitter staff for access to internal systems which allowed them to hijack the accounts and post tweets asking users to send them Bitcoin.
Around 300 people were duped by the tweets, sending $1118,000 to the hackers before Twitter took the tweets down and then locked all verified accounts to stop the breach spreading further. In total, the attack lasted for four hours.”
The Tampa teen was charged with 30 felony charges and is accused of being the “mastermind” of the Bitcoin scheme.
The communications department for Twitter tweeted saying: “We appreciate the swift actions of law enforcement in this investigation and will continue to cooperate as the case progresses. For our part, we are focused on being transparent and providing updates regularly.”
Twitter has some of the best minds in technology working for their company, and yet teens were able to take control over arguably some of the most important people in our society. There should be consequences for Twitter on their handling of the security breach.
It is understandable that this wasn’t a welcomed attack and therefore some people might argue that Twitter shouldn’t be held responsible. However, if you are going to have a platform that houses the world’s top leaders in government, entertainment, business, and education you have to be held to the highest standard.
We appreciate the swift actions of law enforcement in this investigation and will continue to cooperate as the case progresses. For our part, we are focused on being transparent and providing updates regularly.
