Because we live in a world where everything that anyone has ever done ever is up for scrutiny and judgment, Hulu has decided to remove an episode of The Golden Girls because the characters appeared in blackface in it.
Except that they didn’t.
Episode 23 in Season 3, which aired in 1988, was about Dorothy’s son planning to marry an older black woman (Lorraine). Dorothy disapproves because of the age difference, while Lorraine’s family disapproves of her decision to marry a white dude.
Lorraine’s family shows up riiiiiiiiiight when Rose and Blanche are trying out new mud face masks. They are covered in the mud masks when they meet Lorraine’s family, and they say, “This is mud on our faces – we’re not really black.”
The rest of the episode is actually about getting everyone to get along and accept each other. Here’s an excerpt (for as long as YouTube will allow it, anyway.)
This cancel culture bullsh*t has GOT TO STOP. And people need to stop apologizing for stuff that they did or said that was PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE in our culture at the time they said it. Yes, times change, things evolve. But we don’t ERASE THE PAST in the process.
