After reading the headline, “This week: House to vote on legislation to make lynching a federal hate crime”, my initial thought was, “This is dumb. Why is this even necessary?” After reading the entire article, I have no idea what planet the representatives who want this passed live on.
The House is slated to vote this week on legislation that would classify lynching as a federal hate crime, paving the way for the bill to head to President Trump’s desk.
The Emmett Till Antilynching Act — introduced by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) — is scheduled to come to the floor on Wednesday.
“This legislation is long overdue, but it is never too late to do the right thing and address these gruesome, racially motivated acts of terror that have plagued our nation’s history,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement.
The bill is being named after Emmett Till, who was lynched in 1955 at the youthful age of 14. There have been attempts going back 120 years to make lynching a federal crime. All have failed. Assuming the bill passes the House, there is little chance of the Republican Senate taking up the bill. Why? Because it’s pointless and totally political on the part of the Democrats.
If you just arrived from Mars, and read this article, you would think it was currently legal to lynch black people in the United States and that it was happening on a regular basis. Here is what Bobby Rush (D-IL) said.
We are one step closer to finally outlawing this heinous practice and achieving justice for over four thousand victims of lynching, including Emmitt Till. Moreover, the importance of this bill cannot be overstated. From Charlottesville to El Paso, we are still being confronted with the same violent racism and hatred that took the life of Emmett and so many others. The passage of this bill will send a strong and clear message to the nation that we will not tolerate this bigotry.
It already is illegal Bobby! Murder is illegal. Discrimination based on race is illegal. We cannot legislate people’s thoughts or feelings, although liberals would like to. I guess Democrats want to make lynchings even more illegal.
Other Democrats agree with Rush that this legislation needs to be passed.
Kamala Harris (D-CA) said, “Lynchings were horrendous, racist acts of violence. For far too long Congress has failed to take a moral stand and pass a bill to finally make lynching a federal crime. … This justice is long overdue.”
Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) apparently thinks we currently tolerate people being lynched in America. “While we cannot undo the irrevocable damage of lynching and its pervasive legacy, we can ensure that we as a country make clear that lynching will not be tolerated.”
Who is tolerating it?! Please tell us. Especially tell us who is tolerating it since there has not been a lynching in the United States since 1981. Maybe the Democrats should focus on passing legislation that addresses problems that actually exist today, like the cost of college, homelessness, or the opioid crisis.
America’s history of racial lynchings is utterly shameful. All premeditated murder is evil and wicked and deserving of punishment of either death or life in prison. Murder is already illegal so ‘hate crime’ legislation is simply not necessary. I understand that a racially motivated killing does stoke fear in the larger minority community. Ultimately though, murder is murder and all murder is fueled by hate.
