North Korea has canceled a “high-level summit” with South Korea and has threatened to cancel President Trump’s highly anticipated meeting with Kim Jong-un due to our joint military drills with South Korea.
“This exercise targeting us, which is being carried out across South Korea, is a flagrant challenge to the Panmunjom Declaration and an intentional military provocation running counter to the positive political development on the Korean Peninsula,” KCNA said, according to Yonhap News. “The United States will also have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-U.S. summit in light of this provocative military ruckus jointly conducted with the South Korean authorities.”
In other words, North Korea is acting like a paranoid loser again. Big shocker there.
It sounds like officials in Pyongyang are starting to feel all bold and brave again. They say they’re “no longer interested” in one-sided negotiations.
“We are no longer interested in a negotiation that will be all about driving us into a corner and making a one-sided demand for us to give up our nukes and this would force us to reconsider whether we would accept the North Korea-U.S. summit meeting,” the first vice foreign minister, Kim Kye Gwan, said in a statement carried by state media.
He criticized recent comments by Trump’s top security adviser, John Bolton, and other U.S. officials who have said the North should follow the “Libyan model” of nuclear disarmament and provide a “complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement.” He also took issue with U.S. views that the North should fully relinquish its biological and chemical weapons.
This is classic North Korea. It cannot be trusted. Do I hope the meeting takes place? Sure. Would I be surprised if North Korea canceled it? No.
Don’t be mistaken. North Korea is still playing a game on the world stage. Kim Jong-un didn’t suddenly drop his tyrannical nature. He’s a despicable, chubby coward, and North Korea is still a hole.
Maybe North Korea is just trying to gain leverage before the meeting, or maybe it really WILL cancel beforehand.
“The United States must carefully contemplate the fate of the planned North Korea-U.S. summit amid the provocative military ruckus that it’s causing with South Korean authorities,” North Korea stated. “We’ll keenly monitor how the United States and South Korean authorities will react.”
I should note that US officials haven’t heard any DIRECT threats from Pyongyang.
“We will continue to go ahead and plan the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.
To be continued…
