HOORAY! Now Mr. CJ and I can eat at Chili’s without feeling guilty! (Even though the Chili’s restaurants in Utah weren’t participating. Still – would rather not contribute to the idea that we condoned the company’s support of Planned Parenthood in ANY measure. I admit – I was lamenting the loss of their delicious fajitas from my life).
Thanks to the backlash from customers in Kentucky and Indiana, Chili’s restaurants in those states (and ONLY those states – thanks for the concern) that were previously offering vouchers where customers could donate to Planned Parenthood have now said that they are discontinuing the program. The company provided a statement to TheBlaze about it –
At Chili’s, we have a longstanding history and take pride in giving back to unite our local communities together. We recognize every community is unique, and encourage our restaurant managers and franchise partners to support causes that help bring communities together and leave a positive impact on our valued Guests, neighbors, friends and families we serve.
Yesterday, we learned that an independent franchise partner of Chili’s in Indiana and Kentucky made the decision to host a Chili’s Give Back Event on behalf of Planned Parenthood Indiana and Kentucky. While our franchise partner had the best intentions; we have received growing feedback and concern from community members regarding the Give Back Event. This feedback does not reflect Chili’s focus on bringing communities together and the event was never intended to be viewed as a partisan event or political statement, therefore we, along with our franchise partner, have decided to cancel the event.
We will more clearly communicate the focus of Chili’s charitable giving efforts, so that our restaurant managers and franchise partners can feel empowered to support local organizations that bring communities together.”
Here’s my take on this entire controversy: If a private company wants to donate to Planned Parenthood, that’s their prerogative. I’m not being forced to patronize that business (even if they do serve tasty food. Besides, I can make fajitas at home if I so choose). Evidently, many of Chili’s other customers feel the same way too. Which thrills me to no end. I guess all those feminist marchers from last weekend don’t actually speak for the majority of Americans – thank goodness!
Reality is that abortion is legal and Planned Parenthood can operate as they do under the law. I don’t have to like it, but they have a right to do it. Someday that may change (and I pray that I see that day). What I DO have a problem with is the federal government giving MY tax dollars to an organization whose operation involves performing – and even profiting from – something as evil as abortion. Truth is, if Planned Parenthood stopped doing abortions tomorrow, pro-life folks would honestly stop protesting it.
(Fat chance of that happening. But we can dream.)
All I can now is good on Chili’s for listening to their customers and ending this program. I guess more people in America are pro-life than the left would have us all believe.
