Rabbi Goes Off The Rails At Muhammad Ali’s Funeral

Hannah Bleau

I happened to catch some of Muhammad Ali’s funeral on the news Friday. It was…interesting.

At one point, Rabbi Michael Lerner came out to speak on behalf on the Jewish faith, and lemme tell ya. This guy completely caught me off guard. He gave the most progressive oriented speech in the history of progressive oriented speeches.

First, he spoke out against Islamophobia and threw major shade at Donald Trump.

“We will not tolerate politicians or anyone else putting down Muslims and blaming Muslims for the actions of a few people,” Lerner said.

Just “a few” people. No biggie.

“We know what it is like to be demeaned, we know what it is like to have a few people act against the highest vision of our tradition, and then be identified as the value of the entire tradition,” he continued.

Yeah, yeah. Religion of peace. We get it.

“So how do we honor Muhammad Ali? And the answer is that we honor Muhammad Ali by being Muhammad Ali, today,” he said.

Then he went off on income inequality and the mass incarceration of blacks. He also reprimanded the Israeli government for “oppressing” Palestinians. You know. A few days after terrorists murdered  four people over there. Totally appropriate.

It gets worse. He also declared Hillary Clinton the next President of the United States. Because that’s what we do at funerals now. Bill Clinton, who was sitting in the audience, cracked a big ol’ creepy smile.

This man received four standing ovations. FOUR. For acting like an opportunistic jackwagon.

I thought the vast majority of Lerner’s eulogy was inappropriate and uncalled for. Your mileage may vary.
