More Blue States Making Moves That Could Prevent Trump From Being On The 2020 Ballot

Since the Mueller probe didn’t pan out as Democrats expected or hoped, they’re trying something new. How about they figure out how to keep Trump off the ballot altogether?

In a 27-10 vote, the California state senate voted to require a candidate to show 5 years of tax returns. If you recall, President Trump did not release his tax returns after demands during the 2016 election.

The state legislature attempted to do this before, but the measure was shot down by former Gov. Jerry Brown.

“Today we require tax returns, but what would be next?” he asked at the time of his veto. “Five years of health records? A certified birth certificate? High school report cards? And will these requirements vary depending on which political party is in power?”

It should be noted that he did not release his own tax returns either.

As it turns out, California isn’t the only state attempting to make this happen.

Seventeen states have seen bills introduced this year that would require presidential candidates to turn over their tax returns as a condition for ballot access, and such measures have cleared one legislative chamber in at least four states.

For the Trump campaign, however, there may be worse fates than being left off the ballot in liberal enclaves like California, Hawaii and Illinois, where the mandatory tax-return bills are making headway, given that no Republican presidential contender is likely to prevail there.

These are primarily blue states we’re talking about. I hate to say it, but the truth is, even if these measures passed and Trump refuse to release his tax returns, it probably wouldn’t make a difference. He wasn’t going to win some of those hard blue states anyway. (Although you can never say never. Isn’t that right, Hillary?)

In Washington state, the Senate passed a bill last month requiring presidential contenders to release five years’ worth of tax returns before appearing on a primary or general election ballot, but the measure died without House approval when the session adjourned at midnight Sunday.

This is definitely something we’ll keep an eye on.
