As we noted before, Utah’s Mia Love lost her congressional seat to Democrat Ben McAdams by a mere 694 votes.
Love walked away with 134,270 votes (49.87% of the vote), and McAdams took the victory with 134,964 votes (50.13% of the vote). According to the Salt Lake Tribune, “That margin of 0.258 was barely outside the 0.25 percent that would have allowed Love to request a recount.”
She finally gave her concession speech and was unfortunately unable to go out without taking a few swings at President Trump. It was weird, because she started out by talking about how she was shocked that Trump took a shot at her.
When it became apparent Love, 42, would not win re-election, Trump derided the Republican congresswoman for asking him for help earlier this year freeing Utah-native Joshua Holt, who was jailed in Venezuela, but in return “gave me no love.”
“Too bad, sorry about that, Mia,” Trump said of her loss.
“The President’s behavior towards me made me wonder: What did he have to gain by saying such a thing about a fellow Republican,” she said. “It was not really about asking him to do more, was it? Or was it something else? Well Mr. President, we’ll have to chat about that.”
“However, this gave me a clear vision of his world as it is. No real relationships, just convenient transactions. That is an insufficient way to implement sincere service and policy,” she continued.
1.) If you actually think that most politicians work on a foundation of sincere relationships, you’re just naive and 2.) Trump has real relationships, but if you’ve followed his life, it’s no secret that he’s ALWAYS been about getting the deal. It’s all about the end game. What does he need to do to make it happen? Sometimes, you have to suck it up and rub elbows with people you wouldn’t normally be buddy-buddy with. That’s how Trump operates. That’s how he’s done things his ENTIRE LIFE. If you’re shocked by that, you simply haven’t been paying attention.
She also slammed Republicans for failing to properly embrace minorities.
“This election experience and these comments shines a spotlight on the problems Washington politicians have with minorities and black Americans — it’s transactional, it’s not personal,” she said.
“You see, we feel like politicians claim they know what’s best for us from a safe distance, yet they’re never willing to take us home. Because Republicans never take minority communities into their home and citizens into their homes and into their hearts, they stay with Democrats and bureaucrats in Washington because they do take them home — or at least make them feel like they have a home,” she continued.
“I’ve seen the cost to conservatives for not truly taking people into their hearts,” she added. “Democrats saw newly elected black members and women to Congress in this election. This is a matter of fact that Republicans lost in this regard.”
It’s a matter of fact that I vote for people based on factors OTHER than skin color or gender, and that will never change.
“I’m not going away, but now I am unleashed, I am untethered and I am unshackled, and I can say exactly what’s on my mind,” Love added.
I wish her all the best. I just think it’s really unfortunate that she chose to go out in that fashion.
