Biden Wants Congress To Renew Warrantless Surveillance Law. Will GOP Stop It?

In 2005, after the horrifying terrorist attack of 9/11, the Bush/Cheney administration allowed government agencies like the NSA to start illegally surveilling Americans under the guise of national security concerns involving terrorism. You know, the same old “for the greater good” argument that has justified authoritarian power grabs throughout history. Most people think it’s a conspiracy theory when someone says that the government is listening. But they are because they’re allowed to. And that’s because, in 2008, instead of punishing the illegally spying on American citizens, they simply passed a law known as Section 702 to basically start pretending like it was legal all along.

Now, the Biden Administration wants Congress to renew this controversial law that allows warrantless surveillance of American citizens. Of course they do. The Biden Administration is impressively authoritarian. Would anyone be surprised if government agencies used it to root out things like “white supremacy,” “racism,” and “bigotry?” And hey, they might surveil a few school board moms and say they’re monitoring terrorist activity as a throwback to the inception of the illegal spying. And not a single American would be surprised by this.

Luckily for America, people are starting to see government agencies for the hyper partisan Orwellian Ministries they have become. The NYT admits that “the administration’s effort is likely to face particularly steep headwinds because many Republicans have adopted former President Donald J. Trump’s distrust of security agencies and surveillance.” Uh, well, it’s not about Donald Trump, no matter how badly they want everything to be about Donald Trump. It’s about government security agencies proving repeatedly that they cannot be trusted, that they lie with impunity, that they push false information in order to achieve hyper partisan goals, and that they are morally bankrupt. The public sees this because the government security agencies have show them this. The question is, will our GOP representatives have the stones to quash this? Or will they once again disregard the concerns and wishes of the American people they serve and relinquish our civil liberties without our consent?
