I had to learn that liberal nuts like Jessica Valenti exist – where’s my pity party?
If you are unfamiliar with noted feminist seahag Jessica Valenti – first of all, I’m jealous of you. Among her many infamous exploits, she once insisted that tampons should be free because of Obamacare or something. And then there was the time she said some dude she was sitting next to on the subway was sexist because he was checking Twitter while she was snooping on him and she didn’t see that he followed any female tweeters.
So already, I can tell that this column is going to be an absolute treat.
In her latest column, Jessica joins the masses of liberal wrapping themselves in sackcloth and ashes and bemoaning the fact that America has this pesky thing called the Second Amendment, which enables us to own and use firearms to defend ourselves if we so choose. But this time, she’s bringing her young daughter into the fray. In the column, Jessica expresses grief and horror that – OH NOES – she has to explain to her daughter that – GASP – GUNS ARE REAL! Because to this point, young Miss Valenti has been under the impression that guns are as made-up as My Little Pony. From the article –
[…]Layla asked me a question about guns. And I couldn’t help but feel that there was no right way to answer, because all the answers are terrible.
In her room, Layla has a picture of Martin Luther King that she brought home from school earlier this year, and so her question that night was about how he died. I don’t believe much in lying to kids, and Layla is getting bigger – so I told her the truth. And that’s when she asked, shocked, if guns existed “in real life.” It had never occurred to my five year old daughter that guns could be anything but fantastical – something found only in stories, like fairies or unicorns. If only.
Oh. My. Sweet. Smith and Wesson. You are raising your child to be afraid of an inanimate object. What, are you going to teach her that cars are dangerous too? Or butter knives? What if she wants to play baseball someday? That bat could certainly do some damage.
But nope. It’s not the monstrous person behind the gun or the car or the knife or the baseball bat. It’s the SCARY AND EVIL GUN that is going to give little Layla nightmares. So much for not wanting to lie to your child.
Sadly in Jessica’s mind, free tampons are MUCH more important to women than the ability to defend ourselves against muggers and rapists and murderers. In her liberal fantasyland, guns don’t exist and evil criminals don’t get them through illegal means and everyone just skips through a lovely, rainbow-filled landscape where Planned Parenthood is free to tear babies apart and men only follow women on Twitter (that is, if men are even allowed to do anything other than constantly check their ill-gotten privilege and bring Princess Jessica sandwiches).
You know – I can play Jessica’s game too. She wants to hide behind the innocence of a sweet little girl whose mother can’t be arsed to explain basic human behaviors and civil rights and use THAT as an excuse to push for denying Americans their right to defend themselves? Fine. Do you want to know what I was doing at the tender age of five? My parents were teaching me basic gun safety and usage. That’s right. When I was five years old, Dad took me and my younger sister out to an open field near our home and showed us how his shotgun worked. He showed us how to hold it, how to work the safety, how to load it, how to aim, how to put it away when we were done. He ALSO gave us strict rules about only using it when he or my mother were around to supervise, AND Dad followed his own rules about keeping the guns put away (but accessible, if an emergency need arose). Of course, as we kids got older and more practiced, we were allowed to go to the range on our own, because we had more experience and we knew what the crap we were doing. Mom and Dad could trust us to be safe because they TAUGHT us to be safe and comfortable around guns. I actually feel SAFER when I know there’s a gun in the house that I can easily get to if necessary. I hope and pray that I don’t need it, but it’s there regardless.
So there you go – Jessica Valenti uses her daughter’s (and her own) ignorance to push for gun control. Yet another pathetic liberal tactic to punish gun owners for something they didn’t do – and would actually have probably helped prevent had they actually been there to do something about it.
