10th Grade School Assignment Asks Students To Pretend They’re Muslim

Holy mother of WACK.

According to that sourcelink, 10^th graders at Union Grove High School in Wisconsin were asked to pretend that they were Muslims for a World History assignment. I kid you not.

"Give three examples of what you do daily for your religion and any struggles you face," the teacher Beth Urban instructed.

Notice that it says "Muslim male/female in U.S." Hey, I thought this was WORLD history? If they want to be accurate, why don’t they make them pretend they’re Muslims in the Middle East? They could write all about how women can’t go anywhere without male family members. Or talk about how women are basically treated like dog crap. They could mention female genital mutilation. OH. What about Sharia Law? Hello? Anyone? Bueller?

And the Wisconsin Daily Independent makes a couple of great points–

First of all, what documentaries were watched and who produced them?  The Middle East is known for producing several “documentaries” that are full of propaganda and anti-American sentiment.  Is that truly the type of video that our students should be exposed to?  Were there other videos shown to balance the debate on the subject?

 

Is this assignment a conflict between separation of church and state?  There have been many documented cases of Christian students being denied the ability to pray in public school and today’s history books have been mostly stripped of Christian history.  Why is Christianity allowed to be shunned in our public schools while teachers are allowed to assign an assignment as religious based as this?

Is the assignment supposed to make them feel so so so so so sorry for the Muslims living in America? (Despite the fact that NO ONE DOES ANYTHING TO THEM.) I guess pretending to be a Muslim in a foreign country would only make the "religion of peace" look bad, and we absolutely can’t have that. And while we’re at it, why didn't this assignment to include “pretending” to be Jews or Christians? Anyone?
